PITTSBURGH , Pa. — The Pittsburgh Pirates locked up Konnor Griffin, MLB’s No.1 prospect, to a 9-year, $140-million contract on Wednesday, meaning the 19-year-old will remain in Pittsburgh through the 2034 season.

It’s the largest contract by years and total dollars in the organization history.

“Since joining the organization, Konnor has consistently demonstrated the traits we want in a Pirate — a daily commitment to improvement, a team-first mindset and a strong desire to win,” Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said in a statement. “He has met every challenge in front of him, and we are excited to watch him continue that growth alongside his teammates in Pittsburgh. We are thrilled he will be with a Pirate for a long time.”

Griffin was recalled to the Pirates on April 3 and immediately started the team’s next five games.

After ripping an RBI double in his first MLB at-bat, Griffin cooled considerably, going the next three games without a hit.

On Tuesday night, he hit a pair of singles and drove in two.
