The Seattle Mariners were defeated 3-0 by the Texas Rangers on Wednesday. Seattle now holds a 4-9 overall record this season. The Mariners were a fairly popular pick to reach the World Series out of the American League before the season, but the team has not played up to expectations. Offensively, Brendan Donovan has swung the bat well. However, the versatile player who was acquired in a trade from the St. Louis Cardinals during the offseason has made a few mistakes from a defensive standpoint.

Donovan addressed his defense Wednesday, via Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times.

“It’s not something you can run from. You’ve just got to keep preparing and understand I’m not playing to the standard that I set for myself, defensively and what I have done the last few years,” Donovan said. “That’s frustrating. My biggest thing is I just want to help the team win, and I don’t feel like I’m doing a very good job of that over there, so I’ll continue to prepare.”

Donovan is producing on offense, though. He is currently hitting .316/.422/.605. The veteran has also hit three home runs.

Donovan earned the first All-Star selection of his MLB career in 2025. He is a player who is more than capable of helping Seattle from both an offensive and defensive standpoint. He will surely figure things out before too long.

The Mariners will continue to attempt to get back on track. Seattle will next play the Houston Astros at home in a four-game series from Friday-Monday.
