The Houston Astros got dealt another tough injury blow on Wednesday, when two players got hurt within minutes during a game. Jake Meyers and Cristian Javier both left during Houston’s game with the Colorado Rockies. Astros manager Joe Espada gave a brutal admission after the contest about the situation.
“Not what I want to see. It’s hard, hard, hard,” Espada said of the injuries, per the Associated Press. “Got to flush this and get ready to play ball.”
Meyers tweaked his back while getting ready to take a batting appearance at the plate.
“Took a swing, thought I was good to go,” Meyers said after the game. “Took a harder take and it tightened it up more.”
Javier, a pitcher, left soon after due to shoulder issues. He only lasted one inning in the game.
“I trust these guys,” Espada said. “They know how to do it. The injuries piled on. Not a good feeling. If there’s a team that knows how to bounce back, it’s this group in there.”
The Astros ended up losing the game to the Rockies, 9-1. Houston fell to 6-7 on the season, following the loss. Colorado ended up sweeping a three-game series with the Astros.
Astros struggled against the Rockies
Houston has high expectations in 2026 to make a deep run in the Major League Baseball Playoffs. The club got beat soundly though in their series against the rebuilding Rockies.
Espada is hoping his club can bounce back from this brutal series. Houston scored just two total runs in the final two games.
“It’s complicated,” Javier said, per MLB.com. “I’m very disappointed. It’s something where we lost the last two games against the Rockies and the bullpen was used a lot. So I felt like the team needed me out there.”
Houston hopes to get back in the win column, when they next play the Seattle Mariners on Friday.
