DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers claimed right-handed pitcher Yoniel Curet off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday.
Outfielder Parker Meadows was transferred to the 60-day injured list to create a roster spot for Curet, who was optioned to the Tigers’ rookie-league club in Lakeland.
Curet, 23, signed with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2019 after coming from the Dominican Republic. He was ranked as the Rays’ No. 11 prospect by Baseball America as recently as 2024.
Meadows sustained a concussion, a laceration on the inside of his cheek that required stitches, and a fractured bone in his left forearm after colliding with teammate Riley Greene on April 9 in Minnesota.
The Tampa Bay Rays designated Curet for assignment following the 2025 season. He was later traded to the Phillies, who placed him on waivers April 8.
Curet has pitched well at the Double-A level. However, he struggled during his first exposure to Triple-A hitters in 2025, posting a 6.03 ERA in 31 innings with Durham.
Curet will join Grant Holman, another recent waiver claim by the Tigers, in Lakeland. Both pitchers are getting some extra work before being assigned to more permanent homes in the Tigers’ system. Both are also taking spots of players being transferred to the 60-day injured list.
