Although it’s far too early to start thinking about notable MLB trades, it’s not too early to notice trends among contending teams. For the Philadelphia Phillies, their concerning trend is the lack of production from infielders Alec Bohm and Bryson Stott. The Phillies have playoff aspirations, and have two holes in their lineup with Bohm and Stott, which doesn’t bode well for the lineup.

A recent piece for FanSided.com by Christopher Kline titled ‘Finding fresh starts for MLB stars on struggling teams’ features the Phillies as a top landing spot for Houston Astros infielder Isaac Paredes. The Phillies don’t exactly fit the bill of a ‘struggling team’ even though they’re off to a bit of a slow start. Philadelphia will welcome back Zack Wheeler to the rotation shortly, and some of the team’s top bats are starting to come alive. However, what would a trade for Paredes look like? And is it something Dave Dombrowski should consider as the summer months approach?

Phillies Floated as Landing Spot for Astros’ Isaac Paredes
Houston Astros third baseman Isaac Paredes during an MLB game

GettyAstros’ third baseman Isaac Paredes continues to emerge in Phillies trade rumors.

Isaac Paredes was a top trade candidate all offseason, but Houston still may want to hold onto him for now as the Stros are dealing with several injuries. However, if the Astros continue to struggle picking up wins, expect several teams to come calling for Isaac Paredes soon.

Kline believes Paredes could provide the Phillies with an infield list:

“Enter the Phillies, who could use a facelift in the infield. Both Alec Bohm and Bryson Stott are black holes in an underperforming lineup at the moment. Stott’s defense probably keeps him at second base, but Bohm’s days were already numbered on an expiring contract. Paredes is an immediate upgrade, plus the Phillies can hope to get a couple postseason runs out of him.”

In a return package, the Phillies could send the Astros reliever Zach Pop, who just hit the Injured List, and a top pitching prospect to make a deal work. Very notably, Houston needs pitching help at this moment.

Isaac Paredes’ Career By the Numbers

If Phillies fans are unaware about the production level of Isaac Paredes… his numbers do all the talking.

He’s a two-time All-Star third baseman who has an average of 26 doubles and 25 home runs over a 162-game season.

In 102 games last season with Houston, Paredes hit .254 with 20 home runs, 15 doubles, and posted an OPS+ of 124. He’s off to a bit of a slow start for his standards this season, but that means this is a great opportunity for Philadelphia to buy low on him, and then enjoy the positive regression once he heats up. He’s tied to a one-year, $9.35 million contract.

Perhaps Paredes’ best season came in 2023 with the Tampa Bay Rays, where he hit 31 home runs over 143 games played, and posted a bWAR of 4.2.

It’s definitely a trade that Dave Dombrowski should consider, or at least inquire about, as the summer months approach. If the Astros don’t turn things around, they will be a featured team that many think will be sellers at the MLB trade deadline.
