The Washington Nationals host the San Francisco Giants to start this three-game weekend series on Friday.

The Washington Nationals start their first series of the season, hosting the San Francisco Giants, starting on Friday night. The Nationals are trying to get back to .500 with a 9-10 record. Counterintuitively, that might not be a great thing for Washington as it’s been better on the road to start the year with an 8-5 mark. The Nationals are just 1-5 at home so far this season. Washington is three games back of the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves after splitting a four-game series on the road against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Giants have already had two four-game losing streaks to start the season, but they are coming off a win against the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday. That victory helped avoid a five-game losing streak and from getting swept by the Reds in Cincy. San Francisco is already 7.5 games back of the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers with a 7-12 record. Even with a 4-5 away record, the Giants are still the -163 to win back-to-back in this opener on Friday.

After getting shut out in Game 3, the Nationals tied the four-game series against Pittsburgh in an 8-7 victory in 10 innings in Thursday’s finale. James Wood drove in the automatic runner in the 10th for the game-winning run. Neither team scored in the first four innings, but each club knocked in four runs apiece in the fifth. Clayton Beeter earned his first career win, even though he gave up the game-tying run in the ninth inning to send the game into extras. The four errors by Pittsburgh did the Pirates in. The Nationals will start Zack Littell in the opener today. He is looking for his first win of the season with a 0-1 record and a 4.20 ERA in 15 innings across three starts.

San Francisco ended a four-game losing streak with a strong finale against the Cincinnati Reds, winning 3-0. Landen Roupp dominated on the mound for San Francisco, going six scoreless innings while giving up just one hit. The Reds only had one hit from catcher P.J. Higgins, while Roupp struck out six. The Giants scored all of their runs in the seventh inning with a rally started by Matt Chapman, who had an RBI double. The game ended in the benches clearing after reliever Erik Miller struck out Reds first baseman Sal Stewart to end the game. Stewart took exception to Miller celebrating, and the players chirped from there. San Francisco will try to get another start like Roupp’s from their ace, Logan Webb, who gets the start tonight. The righty has struggled a bit so far this season with a 1-2 record and a 5.25 ERA. The ace has eaten up 24 innings, though, in four starts.
