History

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Macalester College senior Niko Alexander delivered a walk-off, run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Scots a 3-2 victory over Saint John’s University in the first game of a MIAC doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Nicholson Field. Macalester, which dropped the second game, 10-2, is now 23-11 overall and 10-4 in conference play. The Johnnies leave St. Paul 17-11 overall and 8-6 in the MIAC.

In the first game, Macalester struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Junior infielder Holden Peacock (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid School) led off with a walk, stole second and came home on a single by sophomore outfielder Tristan Lander (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson). The score remained 1-0 until the top of the fifth, when Saint John’s scored a run on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1. The Scots answered quickly, as senior infielder Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run to left for a 2-1 edge. The Johnnies were able to push a run across in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Mason McCurdy.

In the bottom of the seventh, first year outfielder John McMurray (Washington, D.C./Sidwell Friends) hit a one-out single and sophomore Connor Davison (Redwood City, Calif./Woodside) walked, putting runners on first and second for Alexander. Alexander roped a single to left, and McMurray raced around from second to score the game-winning run. It was Macalester’s fourth walk-off win of the season.

The Scots registered seven hits and three runs off Johnnies’ ace Max Edwards, who entered the game with the second-lowest earned run average (0.88) in Division III. Senior pitcher Ben King (Chicago, Ill./Whitney M. Young Magnet) held Saint John’s to one run on three hits while striking out two and walking none in five innings. Senior Jamie Loizeaux (Albany, Calif./Albany) pitched the seventh to earn the win.

In the second game, the Johnnies scored a run in the second inning and two more in the third on a two-run homer by Reed Marquardt for a 3-0 lead. After Saint John’s put two more runs on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, the Scots tallied their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by senior infielder Josh Planko (Northville, Mich./Northville) that brought home Alexander. Five more runs for the Johnnies in the top of the seventh made it 10-1. McCaskey singled to bring home Gumagay in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 10-2 and close out the scoring.

McMurray, Planko and senior outfielder Stephen Paulsen (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) each had two hits for Macalester. Junior pitcher Isaiah Ramirez (Houston, Texas/Northbrook) tossed two scoreless innings of relief, while senior Tristan Collins (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) and junior Damian Man (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) each pitched a scoreless inning.

Macalester plays a non-conference game against Minnesota Morris on Saturday, April 25. The home game, which will be played at Concordia-St. Paul, begins at 2:00 p.m.
