Shortstop Anthony Devito slugged his fourth home run of the season, but the Hope College baseball team dropped the series opener to Calvin University, 5-2, on Friday at Boeve Stadium.

The freshman from Lithia, Florida (Newsome) crushed a pitch over the right-field fence as the Flying Dutchmen’s second batter of the game for a 1-0 lead.

Calvin starting pitcher Evan Steinbacher held Hope scoreless over his next 7.1 innings on the mound. The right-hander allowed only five hits and one walk before exiting after a leadoff double from sophomore second baseman Colton Kinnie of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (Birmingham Seaholm) in the ninth.

Hope freshman Owen Weber of Canton, Michigan (Canton) pitched seven innings, but the Knights’ two and three hitters — third baseman Landon Mikula and leftfielder Ryan Tschirhart —  combined to go 6-for-6 against him with two runs apiece.

Mikula and Tschirhart both singled in the fourth to spark a go-ahead, two-run rally. Tschirhart blasted a two-run homer in the sixth to extend Calvin’s lead to 4-1.

Weber, who gave up 10 hits, yielded a solo homer to center fielder Thomas Paplawsky in the sixth.

Hope (11-24, 5-11 MIAA) pushed across a run in the seventh. Kinnie scored on a fielder’s choice, but reliever Alex DeAngelis closed the door on any more runs.

Calvin (13-22, 5-11 MIAA) is scheduled to host a doubleheader to complete the series on Saturday, April 25, at 1 p.m.
