The Colorado Rockies announced multiple roster moves on Saturday morning ahead of their second game against the New York Mets.

In a surprising move, first baseman Michael Toglia has been optioned to the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes.

Toglia, 26, was one of the Rockies’ most valuable players in 2024 with 2.2 wins above replacement per Baseball Reference and was fourth overall in our Ranking the Rockies series for that season.

He was optioned to Triple-A after a bumpy start in which he had just five hits—four of which were home runs—over the first fifteen games of the 2024 season, but returned in June and went .233/.331/.469 with 15 doubles, four triples, and 21 more home runs the rest of the way. He also boasted one of the better walk rates in baseball over the remainder of the season while providing stellar first base defense.

Toglia’s 2025 has not gone as planned. While he continues to be a strong defender at first base, his bat has been cold. Toglia has hit just .194/.266/.349 with six home runs through the first 54 games of the season. He leads all of Major League Baseball in strikeouts (81), strikeout rate (39.1%) and is worth an eye-watering -1.1 wins above replacement.

He even saw himself get temporarily benched by interim manager Warren Schaeffer to work on his swing and plate approach earlier this year.

As a corresponding roster move, the Rockies have selected the contract of infielder Keston Hirua from Triple-A Albuquerque. He will wear no. 7 on his jersey and join the team in New York.

Hiura, 28, was once a top prospect with the Milwaukee Brewers organization, but has bounced around the league over the last two seasons. The Rockies signed him to a minor league deal prior to spring training.

Playing primarily as the Isotopes’ first baseman, Hiura’s bat has caught fire in the month of May. In 22 games this month he hit .345/.427/.726 with six doubles, a triple, and eight home runs. Hiura has failed to record a base hit in just two games during that stretch.

To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, infielder Aaron Schunk has been designated for assignment. The Rockies’ 40-man roster is full.
