The root of Erick Fedde’s early problems was fairly apparent, and fixing that has been the solution to those woes.
Fedde starts Sunday as the Cardinals face the Rangers at 12:05 p.m. in the rubber game of a three-game set. The game airs only on Roku.
In the season’s first month, walks were killing the right-handed Fedde (3-4, 3.90 ERA). His 11.8% walk rate at the time was the fifth-worst among qualified starters and one of the highest of Fedde’s career.
That played a big role in Fedde’s 4.68 ERA in March and April.
In May, Fedde walked just 8.1% of batters and put up a 3.03 ERA for the month, his second-best ERA in his four months as a Cardinal.
That plus an improved strikeout rate (17.7% in May up from 12.5% a month earlier) helped cover up some other trouble spots, like a .379 batting average against Fedde’s cutter in May.

For the Rangers, right-hander Jacob deGrom (4-2, 2.42 ERA) will start. It’s his third year in Texas, and it’s already his most productive. DeGrom made just nine starts over his first two seasons in Texas.
Not long after joining Texas on a a five-year, $185 million deal, DeGrom required Tommy John surgery.
The Cardinals are 33-25, second in the National League Central and three games behind Chicago.
The Rangers are 28-31, third in the American League West.

Injury report
Jordan Walker, OF (left wrist inflammation): Walker felt pain in his left wrist during the Cardinals’ most recent home stand and had the level of that pain go “in and out” when the club traveled to Baltimore for a three-game series, Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said. Walker attempted to take on-field batting practice Friday before the Cardinals’ opened a three-game series vs. the Ranger but “didn’t feel good” after taking a couple of swings, Marmol added. The Cardinals placed Walker on the 10-day injured list, a move that is retroactive to Thursday, knowing his injury would keep him out “several days.” Marmol believes Walker’s stay won’t be longer than the 10 days and may not require a rehab assignment. Zach Thompson, LHP (shoulder, lat strain): Lefty returned to Jupiter, Florida, and a resumption of his throwing program after going through a battery of exams and evaluations in St. Louis over the past week. He did not receive any additional treatments, which was a good result as they set up a plan for him to recover from a setback. Updated May 26
