The Journal-News email inbox got a news release today that made everyone turn to each other and question who was surveyed. The subject line reads: “Cincinnati Reds’ signature hot dog ranks #2 worst in MLB, says new ranking.”
Um, what?
We’re all locals here. Skyline Chili is a staple in our very Midwest diets. The report took us by surprise; we all love a Skyline cheese coney.
The news release came from a publicity rep for casino.org, which has its “Wiener League Rankings” report online. It highlights what the fans they surveyed say about signature ballpark hotdogs across the U.S.
Clearly, we were not surveyed.
The Skyline Chili Dog at GABP has a score of 37 of 100 and only ranks above the Johnsonville Bratwurst at American Family Field, home of the Milwaukee Brewers.
The report also has this info listed about the Skyline coney:
It is 4 inches in length
It costs $1.63 per inch
The coney gets a 5 out of 5 on messiness (we see that as part of the fun)
It received a 5 out of 5 on creativity
Unique ingredients are Greek-spiced, cinnamon-laced chili and a mound of shredded cheddar cheese
The methodology for this report that is nearly an attack on Cincinnati and southwest Ohio says casino.org ranked all 30 MLB teams based on all of the factors listed above, calling the messiness “napkin necessity.”
“Skyline chili dog being second to last is a CRIME,” said Middletown Reporter Bryn Dippold.
Others in the newsroom agree; why would anyone complain about a full mound of cheese and a cinnamon flavor in the chili?
At No. 1, the Vienna Hot Dog at Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, got a 70.6 of 100. Which means, no one’s dogs were perfect.
One newsroom person did say “I do love a Chicago dog though.”
Other top-ranking hot dogs:
Comiskey Dog, Guaranteed Rate Field, Chicago White Sox
Tijuana-Style Hot Dog, Petco Park, San Diego Padres
Hatfield Beef Frank, Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia Phillies
Hot Maple Bacon Hot Dog, Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia Phillies
