CORBIN, Ky. (WYMT) – This season Corbin beat Whitley Co. in the 13th Region Championship game to secure their spot in the State Tournament.
“As soon as you win one, it kind of puts a target on your back,” Head Coach Cody Philpot said. “Everybody sets out to get you that next year, and it’s really difficult, and hard to get to the top, but it’s really hard to stay there.”
This will be Corbin’s second consecutive trip to the State Tournament.
“You know getting to that spot, and the moment, the first time you’re there, everything is a little bit different,” Coach Philpot stated. “Seeing that before, there is no surprises coming into it.”
In the first round of the State Tournament, Corbin will face Pleasure Ridge Park at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, June 6.
“They have won a lot of state titles,” Coach Philpot said. “It’s definitely a tradition rich program. Always play the game well. Super solid.”
Coach Philpot dove deeper into how Pleasure Ridge Park plays the game of baseball.
“They play the game hard,” Coach Philpot stated. “They try to keep pressure on you, try to run the bases, and do some things to keep pressure on the defense.”
The Red Hounds have seven seniors on their team who were on the big stage last year.
“They’ve always been winners,” Coach Philpot said. “Their actually the first crew of kids to come through and graduate that have won three region championships in their four year career.”
Heading into this matchup, Coach Philpot wants his team to stick with what has gotten them to this point.
“We’re going to have to be ourselves,” Coach Philpot stated. “Not get to high, to low…..you’ve got to play the game. Being able to emotionally handle all that comes with baseball is what makes it such a special game. So if we can handle the emotions and magnitude of the game, and the crowd, and the community support we are going to have, and go out and be us. At the end of the day, execute what we’ve done all year.”
Corbin has seen a lot of success over the last few years in baseball and Coach Philpot credits that to the Red Hound community.
“Any chance I get I like to thank our community,” Coach Philpot said. “Our community, our school, our administration are all wonderful. You see a lot of success out of Corbin in athletics in all different kinds of sports and activities. A lot of that can be attributed to our community, and the support.”
