Happy Wednesday, Athletics Nation!

The A’s season has turned into a nightmare, but rookie shortstop Jacob Wilson continues to be a dream coming true. Jacob’s stellar numbers for May include a .368 batting average, the best mark in MLB for the month. Unsurprisingly, this earned AL Rookie of the Month honors for Wilson, currently a strong ROY favorite.

J Willy’s consistent contact skills are likely to keep the accolades coming, as his performance for last month was hardly an outlier. Coming into Tuesday, Wilson was slashing .355/.393/.504 on the season. So the May numbers reflect a moderate surge in his walk and home run rates compared to earlier in the seaso, but nothing so dramatic as to be shocking. Hopefully, we’re just seeing an outstanding player continue to progress.

Wilson is not just the best rookie in baseball—he is easily the best player on the A’s so far this season with 2.8 fWAR. Lawrence Butler is second best at 1.6 fWAR. Jacob leads all A’s hitters in batting, on base, and slugging percentages—all while playing excellent defense at a premium position.

If being the best Athletic sounds about on par with winning a turtle race, then consider that Wilson is also among the top ten best players in the game per fWAR, full stop. You can’t sneeze at that! So let’s all thank Jacob Wilson for being a fine silver lining in this thus far very disappointing 2025 for the Athletics.

Good to see the Law Dog picking up at the plate.

Lawrence Butler has reached base safely in 15 of his last 16 games with nine doubles and three homers over that span.
