Gavin Sheets did not have a hit in the last five games for the San Diego Padres. He came to the plate with two runners on in the first inning against the San Francisco Giants and started the scoring for the game that ended with the Giants getting a 6-5 win at Oracle Park, Wednesday.

Sheets hit a ball off Giants starting pitcher Kyle Harrison that carried deep to right field and banged off the brick wall. The ball bounced back to the field and rolled back toward the infield, allowing Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado to score to give the Padres a 2-0 lead and left Sheets standing on third base.

The hit broke an 0-for-10 streak for Sheets, dating back to May 30 against the Pittsburgh Pirates, and was his second career triple.

Jackson Merrill helped add to the San Diego lead with an RBI-double down the left field line in the top of the fifth. The hit allowed Tatis Jr. to score to give the Padres a 3-0 lead.

Sheets followed Merrill with his second hit of the game. He hit a two-run single back through the middle of the infield. The ball hit Harrison on the mound and deflected into right field, allowing Luis Arraez and Merrill to score to put San Diego up, 5-0.

San Diego starter Nick Pivetta was cruising through the first four innings, but allowed an RBI-double to Patrick Bailey in the bottom of the fifth. The double allowed Daniel Johnson to score, cutting the Padres’ lead to 5-1.

Jung Hoo Lee hit a shallow fly ball that dropped in front of a diving Brandon Lockridge in left field in the bottom of the sixth inning. Lee was able to get to second base on the play. Matt Chapman took advantage of a hanging offspeed pitch, and hit it over the left field wall to make the score, 5-3.

Pivetta started the top of the seventh, but was taken out of the game after allowing the first two runners to reach. Jason Adam replaced him on the mound and recorded a strikeout. He then allowed a single to Tyler Fitzgerald to load the bases. Heliot Ramos tied the game 5-5 with a two-run double to left field.

The Giants took the lead on a Lee sacrifice fly to center field, which allowed Fitzgerald to score to give San Francisco a 6-5 lead. Ramos was able to move up to third base on the play. Adam then issued a walk to Wilmer Flores to put runners on the corners. Adam was able to get out of the inning when Chapman flied out to centerfield.

The Padres got a leadoff single from Tatis Jr. in the top of the ninth. Arraez hit a ball to the right-center gap, that was tracked down by Johnson.

Machado then blooped a single into left to put runners at first and second. Merrill struck out and the game landed on the shoulders of Sheets. After a double steal, Sheets popped out to Chapman on a 1-1 pitch to end the game and secure the win for San Francisco.

The Padres play the Giants, Thursday at 12:45 p.m.
