RED WING, Minn. (KTTC) – For the first time in program history, Stewartville baseball is headed to state.
With an 8-4 win over Kasson-Mantorville, the Tigers claimed the Section 1AAA Championship to earn the team’s first-ever state tournament berth.
“I think that it just means the world to everyone in this dugout and everyone that supported the program,” head coach Tyler Schmitz said.
The Tigers entered the section tournament as the No. 6 seed, but they’ve gone unscathed in their postseason run.
It’s a dramatic turnaround for a team that started 0-6.
“Since then our team has really gelled and came together,” Stewartville senior Jayce Klug said. “Each of us are going out there to play for each other, not for ourselves. I think that really showed especially today and recently in the season.”
Stewartville will compete in the Class AAA Tournament which begins on Wednesday, June 11 in Jordan. That opportunity is a dream come true for players like Klug.
“I was so excited for this chance to make history for this school and go to state in the game I’ve loved since I was a little kid,“ he said.
