Catcher J.T. Realmuto and the Philadelphia Phillies didn’t have much to complain about before Wednesday’s bout with the Toronto Blue Jays. They entered the matchup just a half-game behind the New York Mets for first place in the NL East and were coming off an 8-3 win over Toronto on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Realmuto had hits in his previous two games after hitting .205 in May.

However, the Phillies lost a pitcher’s duel 2-1, with their only run coming off of a Nick Castellanos solo homer to right-center in the second inning. Blue Jays pitcher José Berríos finished with one earned run on four hits across six innings, and their bullpen tossed three shutout frames.
Additionally, Realmuto left the game in the ninth after being hit in the groin with a pitch while catching, via NBC Sports’ John Clark.

“JT Realmuto is leaving the game after being hit in the groin area with a pitch,” he reported. “He is one tough dude. JT was in a lot of pain.”
Phillies manager Rob Thomson didn’t yet know a return timetable after the contest, via The Athletic’s Matt Gelb.

“J.T. Realmuto was getting checked by a doctor at Rogers Centre, Rob Thomson said. Realmuto told Thomson he’s had worse,” he reported. “The team had no further updates.”
Realmuto finished the night 1-for-3 and was replaced by backup Rafael Marchán. Toronto won the game that inning on a walk-off double by fellow catcher Alejandro Kirk.
Realmuto is slashing .226/.297/358 with five homers and 22 RBI across 51 games. The 34-year-old had played for the Phillies since 2019 and spent 2014-18 with the Miami Marlins.
Philadelphia will play its rubber match against Toronto on Thursday before continuing its road trip vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates. After that, it will host the Chicago Cubs and Blue Jays.
