Thanks to Hunter Goodman’s bat and Brenton Doyle’s glove, the Rockies have won two games in a row and secured their first series win of 2025 with a nail-biter of a win on Tuesday night.
Doyle Being Doyle
With Zach Agnos on the bereavement list, Seth Halvorsen served as the closer in the ninth. Throwing triple-digit heat, Halvorsen forced a foul popout and a flyout to left. With Heriberto Hernandez as the Miami’s last hope, he connected on a slider a sent a ball to deep center field, giving Rockies fans that familiar sense of dread of a win slipping away. Enter Doyle for the rescue. After getting an amazing jump and timing his leap perfectly, Doyle made a leaping catch against the wall to secure the win.
Goodman Goes Yard, Again
After hitting two homers in the Rockies win on Monday, Goodman swung a big bat again, doubling and hitting the go-ahead homer in the eighth inning. Goodman sent a sweeper to left field, just sneaking over the wall at 369 feet for his 10th homer of the year, which leads the team.
Dollander Returns For Short Start
In his first start since May 18 after being placed on the 15-day IL with right forearm tightness, Dollander struggled with his control, throwing 31 balls compared to only 28 strikes in three innings. Despite not throwing many strikes, Dollander still managed to put up two scoreless frames to start the game. Compared to the 38 pitches he threw in his last start against Arizona, Dollander only needed 25 to get through two innings, while posting one strikeout and one walk with no damage.
In the third, Dollander’s command took a turn for the worse and he started the inning with back-to-back walks. After a mound visit, Dollander got Xavier Edwards to fly out, but Jesús Sánchez hit an RBI single to right to put the Marlins up 1-0. After Agustín Ramírez hit a fielder’s choice to get the lead runner trying to go home, Kyle Stowers hit a single up the middle to drive in another run and put Miami up 2-0. After throwing 34 pitches in the third, Dollander ended his short night, giving up two runs on two hits with three walks and one strikeout.
Rockies Even It Up
The Rockies used a one-out walk and a stolen base by Mickey Moniak to jumpstart a two-run fifth inning to tie the game. Tyler Freeman followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Jordan Beck then connected for an RBI single to cut the Marlins lead in half. Freeman was able to advance to third on Beck’s hit and came around to score when Thario Estrada hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
Beck stole second, but Goodman struck out to end the inning.
Freeman led the Rockies offense, going 3-for-4 with one run scored, while Goodman and Beck each added two hits to combine all seven of Colorado’s hits.
Beautiful Bullpen
With Dollander only making it one-third of the way through the game, the bullpen needed to be perfect to give the Rockies a chance — and they were. Not only did they throw six scoreless frames on Tuesday, but they added on to Monday’s four to make it 10 scoreless innings in two games in Miami. Juan Mejia started the showcase, throwing two scoreless, hitless innings, surrendering only one walk. Jimmy Herget was up next, taking over in the sixth and throwing 1 2⁄3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts, despite giving up four hits. After giving up back-to-back singles with two outs in the seventh, Victor Vodnik replaced Herget in a tough situation. Needing just one out, he got it when he forced Ramírez to ground out. Vodnik threw a delightfully uneventful frame in the eighth, setting up Halvorsen’s impressive save.
