San Diego Padres minor league affiliates went 3-2 on Wednesday.

Here is a recap of the night’s events.

El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 14-4 vs Albuquerque) (30-29 on the season)

Bryce Johnson – 3-for-4, Double, Four RBI

RIpken Reyes – 3-for-5, Two RBI Singles

Matt Waldron – 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 K (70 pitches – 51 strikes)

El Paso’s lineup brought out the big guns, torching Isotopes pitching for 14 runs on 17 hits. Bryce Johnson and Ripken Reyes each had three hits, with Johnson driving in a season-high four runs. Ripken Reyes had three hits as well, with two of those hits being RBI singles. Cody Roberts had three hits as well, scoring three runs. Nate Mondou and Clay Dungan had two hits apiece, while Tirso Ornelas had another three-hit game.

Matt Waldron made his first start in a non-rehab capacity and was rather efficient, tossing five innings on 70 pitches. Waldron struck out six batters, getting whiffs on 33% of knuckleballs swung at. Waldron got chases on 44% of swings against as well, making the Isotopes lineup have all sorts of fits. Austin Krob had one of his best outings of the season, striking out three batters in three innings. Krob threw 32 pitches in his outing, and saw his sinker max out at 94.2 mph while his slider got whiffs on 43% of swings against.

San Antonio Missions (Lost 10-7 in 10 innings vs Midland) (28-25 on the season)

Devin Ortiz – 3-for-5, RBI Single

Kai Murphy – 2-for-3, Sac Fly, Two Singles

Jagger Haynes – 6 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 6 K (87 pitches – 51 strikes)

San Antonio rallied back from a late 6-4 deficit to send the game to extra innings, but they were unable to hold off the Midland offense, falling 10-7 in ten innings. Devin Ortiz had three hits in the game, driving in a run on an RBI single. Kai Murphy had a sac fly as part of a 2-for-3 day, and Romeo Sanabria had a base hit while driving in two on two productive outs. Francisco Acuna walked three times, scored two runs, and stole a base. Brandon Valenzuela singled and walked twice, but was caught trying to steal a base in his lone attempt.

Jagger Haynes worked around command issues to make it through six innings. Granted, allowing only two hits in that span certainly helps. Haynes got whiffs on 31.4% of swings against and continues to limit the hard contact. While the surface numbers for Haynes look uninspiring at best, he has a 4.39 FIP in 51.1 innings this season. Sam Whiting allowed four runs in 1.2 innings of work, surrendering the lead thanks to five hits allowed. Ryan Och tossed 1.1 innings to keep the RockHounds at bay, and with a Missions rally, the game headed to extra innings. Manuel Castro came on in the tenth and struggled, allowing a go-ahead sac fly, two hits, and three walks in 0.2 innings. Despite his dominant April, Castro has struggled in extra innings, posting a 10.80 ERA in 3.1 innings across five outings.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Won 5-3 vs Beloit) (27-26 on the season)

Braedon Karpathios – 1-for-4, Two-RBI Double

Jake Snider – 2-for-4, Two RBI Singles

Clark Candiotti – 3.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K (67 pitches – 42 strikes)

Sean Barnett – 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K (12 pitches – 6 strikes)

Clark Candiotti tossed an effective start against the Sky Carp, throwing 3.2 innings of two-run baseball with five strikeouts. The right-hander was efficient, living within the strike zone and using both his slider and changeup to solid results. A rested TinCaps bullpen did the rest, as Nick Wissman got out of the fourth unscathed, paving the way for Sean Barnett’s professional debut on the mound. Barnett threw 12 pitches, six for strikes, and got three outs on balls in play. Barnett is likely to see more time on the mound as the season goes on, and for him to get on the mound for the first time is a welcome sight to the organization. Fernando Sanchez got the win with two scoreless innings, and Tyson Neighbors came on in the eighth to stymie a bases-loaded jam, securing a five-out save.

At the plate, Fort Wayne’s offense succeeded on a patient approach. Rosman Verdugo drew three walks in the game, scoring a run. Kai Roberts went 3-for-4 with three singles and came around to score two runs. Roberts also stole his eighth base of the season, while Brandon Butterworth stole his ninth. Jacob Campbell had two hits and an RBI, while Jake Snider drove in two runs on two RBI singles. Braedon Karpathios provided the team with some insurance in the later innings, doubling in two runs against former Padre signee Woo-Suk Go. The team as a whole went 4-for-11 with runners in scoring position in the win.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 10-6 vs Modesto) (26-27 on the season)

Lamar King Jr – 5-for-5, Two RBI

Zach Evans – 3-for-5, Double, Four RBI

Kash Mayfield – 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K (24 pitches – 18 strikes)

Kash Mayfield returned to the mound after missing three weeks with shoulder discomfort, tossing two innings on 24 pitches. Mayfield was effective, throwing four strikeouts in his brief outing. Considering the layoff, Mayfield will likely be building back his arm strength in his next few outings. Kleiber Olmedo tossed 4.2 innings of long relief, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out four. Olmedo showed stronger command when compared to his last start, walking only two. Braian Salazar recorded the win with one inning of one-run baseball, and Bernard Jose recorded the final four outs to notch a four-out save.

Lamar King Jr had his best offensive day of the season, finishing 5-for-5 with a double, four singles, and two RBI. King succeeded by hitting to all fields, with two singles up the middle, two to the left side, and a double to right field. Victor Figueroa had two doubles in the game, driving in two runs on a ninth-inning double. Zach Evans had three hits in five at-bats, hitting a double and driving in four runs in the game. Yendry Rojas was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, and B.Y. Choi had two hits in four at-bats, also scoring two runs. Ryan Jackson has been a rock out of the leadoff spot in the absence of Cobb Hightower, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI single and a run scored.

ACL Padres (Lost 7-6 vs ACL Rangers) (5-19 on the season)

Luis De Leon – 2-for-3, Two Singles, Three RBI

Yimy Tovar – 3-for-5, Two RBI

Humberto Cruz – 2.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 K

Humberto Cruz made his longest career start, pitching into the third inning and striking out three batters. Cruz got four of nine outs on the ground, and his sinker looked rather strong against the ACL Rangers. His command was showing improvements, but he did uncork a run-scoring wild pitch in the third inning to give the Rangers a lead. Jesus Lopez tossed a scoreless 1.1 innings, and Ruben Galindo allowed a run in 0.2 innings of work. Yovannki Pascual took the loss, allowing a run in the sixth and two in the bottom of the seventh, as two runners he left on base came in to score against Elvis Reyes

Offensively, the Padres’ middle infielders had a successful day. Yimy Tovar had three hits in five at-bats, driving in two runs on a pair of RBI singles. Luis De Leon had two hits, both singles, and drove in three runs. Two runs came in on his singles, while the third RBI was as a result of a bases-loaded walk. Jesus Castro had two doubles, scoring a run and driving in another run. Donte Grant scored two runs, and Gustavo Marquez reached base twice (on a walk and a single), scoring one run in the loss.
