[Jim. Your regularly scheduled recapper had something crop up, so I’m throwing something up here for now pending…]
Well. Did anyone see THAT coming. With one out in the ninth, down by six and with the bases empty, the Diamondbacks pulled off a stunning victory. They scored seven runs in the top of the ninth, to pull off the kind of staggering comeback they have seen from the other side all too often this season. The result completed a three-game sweep in Atlanta and kept the team a perfect 4-0 in June.
It was all the more remarkable, after Brandon Pfaadt struggled for a second consecutive start. He did at least get some out this time: nine of them, to be precise. But he was still charged with six runs, five earned, on five hits and two walks with two K’s. Tommy Henry struck out seven in four innings, but also gave up three runs, and Kendall Graveman allowed one more in the eighth. The offense had got three in the fourth on hits by Geraldo Perdomo and Josh Naylor, and Ketel Marte homered in the top of the eighth, his 11th of the year. But at 10-4 down, it was surely all over as we entered the ninth. Lazy cop-out recapper time:
Suárez struck out swinging.
Gurriel Jr. homered to left (400 feet). 5-10
Tawa walked.
Thomas homered to right (404 feet), Tawa scored. 7-10
Herrera walked
Carroll doubled to center, Herrera to third.
Marte reached on infield single to shortstop, Herrera scored, Carroll to third. 8-10
Perdomo popped out to shortstop.
Vargas singled to center, Carroll scored, Marte to second. 9-10
Suárez doubled to left, Vargas scored and Marte scored. 11-10
Gurriel Jr. walked.
Tawa lined out to center.
Or, if you prefer:
Shelby Miller took over in the bottom of the ninth, allowed a one-out walk and then rolled up a double-play. There you go. Or, as Sarah Langs would probably have said, Wheeeeee!

It has been a stellar day, personally. The Abba show was indescribably good, and to come back to the hotel and see this? Yeah. We’re undefeated since I left for Britain. Accepting Venmo donations to keep me here, in Abba tickets, curry and warm beer as long as necessary.
