Brandon Woodruff has been diagnosed with a right elbow contusion, the Milwaukee Brewers announced June 5, and the right-hander remains on the 15-day injured list after being returned from his minor-league rehab assignment.

The team also said Woodruff suffered no structural damage in the elbow, and that he is expected to be sidelined a couple weeks as he recovers.

Woodruff was injured June 3 when he was struck in the elbow by a 108.2-mph line drive while making what was expected to be his final start at Class AAA Nashville.

From there, Woodruff would have been slotted back into the Brewers’ rotation and made his first major-league appearance since September 23, 2023. He underwent major surgery on his right shoulder in October of that year and signed a two-year contract with Milwaukee in March 2024 with an eye on a return to action sometime in 2025.

Now, that return is on hold, again.

This marks the second time Woodruff has had a minor-league rehab stint interrupted in its final stages; last month he suffered an ankle injury that necessitated more recovery time.

“Woody’s done a tremendous job,” assistant general manager Matt Kleine said June 4 in Cincinnati as he discussed the entirety of Woodruff’s comeback with reporters. “This has been a really long process for him. He very badly wants to contribute to this team. He’s such a great teammate. He cares about this organization, and he’s meant a tremendous amount to this organization.

“Since his arrival, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that it’s coincided with this run of success that the Brewers have had. Woody’s been a tremendous part of that. We’d be lying if we told you that he wasn’t champing at the bit to get back, and we’re excited to get him back, too.”
