The Yankees turned in a good win on Thursday, shutting out the Guardians thanks to a stellar Max Fried start and three RBIs from Cody Bellinger. They still own a lead of more than five games in the East, though there was some movement elsewhere in a Thursday of action.
Here’s a rundown of the other top American League action.
Chicago White Sox (20-43) 3, Detroit Tigers (41-23) 2
There’s never a good time to drop a game to the White Sox, and the Tigers did so in rather dramatic fashion. Both Casey Mize and Sean Burke turned in at least decent outings on Thursday, with both right-handers managing two-run efforts against their division rival.
Things stayed quiet until the bottom half of the fourth, when the White Sox tagged Mize with a pair of runs, first on Mike Tauchman’s sacrifice fly, then on an RBI knock from Chase Meidroth through the right side.
The Sox held a 2-0 lead through six innings in this one, though Burke took his first hit in the top of the seventh. First, Wenceel Pérez belted his third home run of the season, a solo shot into right-center, before Dillon Dingler tied the game up with a two-out bloop single into right field. Burke would eventually finish the seventh inning, capping off a nice start overall, racking up five K’s.
Locked in at 2-2, the Sox and Tigers completed nine innings still knotted up. Steven Wilson got the Sox through a scoreless inning, giving them the chance to score their extra innings runner for the win. Austin Slater put Chicago in position with a sacrifice bunt, before Tim Elko became the hero, grounding a single through a drawn-in infield. The walk-off knock secured the White Sox their 20th win of the season, though they may or may not still be 20.5 games back in the Central.
Houston Astros (34-28) 8, Pittsburgh Pirates (23-40) 2
The Astros built on their AL West lead with a win on Thursday, cashing in on the Mariners loss. Framber Valdez turned in a solid seven innings of work, and eight runs on ten hits did the trick with the bats.
The Buccos struck first in the bottom of the third inning, when Oneil Cruz produced an RBI groundout. Their lead was a small and short-lived, however, as a solo shot from Isaac Paredes, his 13th on the season, started a big inning for Houston.
Cam Smith gave the ‘Stros their first lead with a single later in the fourth, and Jacob Melton pushed across two more with a knock of his own. Suddenly after four innings, Houston owned a 4-1 lead against Mitch Keller and the Pirates, one they would never surrender.
Cruz tallied another RBI for Pittsburgh in the fifth, but the Astros answered back with a pair of scores in the top of the seventh. Valdez finished by going seven innings, allowing a pair of runs, but striking out 11 Pirates along the way.
Paredes put the finishing touches on the ballgame with his second homer of the game in the ninth inning, putting the ‘Stros up by the final of 8-2. It was a tide-changing win for Houston, as a loss from the Mariners gave them sole possession of first in the West.
Other Games
Baltimore Orioles (25-36) 4, Seattle Mariners (32-29) 3: The Orioles snagged a win on Thursday thanks to a three-run sixth inning, which featured homers from both Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson. Cal Raleigh did his part for the M’s though, belting his league-leading 24th home run in his terrific season thus far.
Athletics (24-40) 14, Minnesota Twins (34-28) 3: It was a desperately needed win for the Athletics against the Twins, who had lost nine straight coming into this one. It was a resounding one, too, as they scored 11 runs in the first four innings, and had finished with 14, including two homers from Tyler Soderstrom, getting his total up to 14 on the year.
