CINCINNATI — Ketel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo hit back-to-back two-out home runs in the top of the third inning, and the Diamondbacks lead the Reds 3-2 heading to the bottom of the fifth at Great American Ballpark.

Marte and Perdomo hit their home runs to left field off Reds starter Nick Lodolo. Marte has 12 home runs on the season (37 games), and Perdomo has reached a career high with seven.

The Diamondbacks led 3-0, but the Reds answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run shot off Diamondbacks starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez by leadoff hitter T.J. Friedl.

Rodriguez has allowed two runs on five hits with no walks and two strikeouts through four innings in his first start since May 14. He was on the 15-day injured list for three weeks.

Rain clouds are moving in and there appear to be showers in the area.

Suarez revels in return to Cincinnati

Eugenio Suarez will always love Cincinnati for a number of reasons, and so will his family.

The Diamondbacks third baseman and longtime former Reds player brought his family with him to Ohio to reunite with friends and watch Suarez’s current team play his old one. Suarez wore a Reds uniform from 2015-21 before moving on to the Seattle Mariners and then the Diamondbacks.

“It’s something very special. Cincinnati is always in my heart,” Suarez said. “Coming back, seeing people around, seeing the city and seeing former teammates or clubhouse (attendants), it’s very special.”

Suarez said his Cincinnati-born daughter is still a Reds fan.

“The biggest part of who I am right now is because of this city,” Suarez said. He also enjoys hitting at Great American Ballpark, because, as he put it, the ball flies out of the park no matter where it is hit.

It was here where Suarez’s “Good Vibes Only” mentality first came to be. He was given a rousing introduction by the stadium public address announcer each time he came up to bat, as if he was still on the Reds’ roster.

“Here is where everything I am as a player was built,” Suarez said in Spanish. “Here is where everything was born, ‘good vibes,’ the good energy, the laughter, the happiness … but I learned to be more than just a ball player. I became a better human being and a better person.”

Days off for Carroll, Naylor

Lovullo did not have Corbin Carroll nor Josh Naylor in his lineup on June 6, opting to give both a day off. Naylor felt right shoulder pain after a check swing during an at-bat in Atlanta on June 3 but played through it. Both were possibly available for later in the game if needed, Lovullo said.

Randal Grichuk started in right field for Carroll, and Tim Tawa opened at first base, with Ketel Marte at designated hitter and Ildemaro Vargas at second base.

Diamondbacks reinstate Rodriguez

After three weeks on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation, left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez was reinstated to the active roster on Friday, June 6, before the Diamondbacks-Reds game.

The Diamondbacks optioned left-handed pitcher Tommy Henry to Triple-A Reno.

Lovullo said Rodriguez was to be limited to an undisclosed pitch count.

The Reds have spent most of the season hovering around the .500 mark, though they enter this series a few games under after a 2-5 stretch over the past seven games. Their offense is a smidge above average, scoring 4.42 runs per game, while their pitching has been pretty good with a 3.80 ERA that is tied for the fifth-best mark in the National League. LF/DH Austin Hays has been their best hitter; he has a .303/.346/.555 mark with six homers in 119 at-bats. SS Elly De La Cruz is hitting .257 with 12 homers and 19 steals but has struck out 75 times in 241 at-bats. They have been getting strong performances from several starters, including LHP Andrew Abbott (2.18 ERA), RHP Hunter Greene (2.72 ERA) and LHP Nick Lodolo (3.10 ERA), but Greene recently landed on the injured list with a groin strain. RHP Emilio Pagan has received most of the save chances, converting 15 of 17 opportunities with a 3.71 ERA. The Reds have moved on from RHP Alexis Diaz, their former closer, trading him to the Dodgers last month.
