After winning a historic CIF Central Section championship, the Orcutt Academy softball team will go after a historic regional championship.
No. 2 Orcutt Academy will play at No. 1 Rancho Mirage (21-10) Saturday at 2 p.m. for the CIF Southern California Division 5 Regional championship after rolling to a 10-0 win over No. 4 Oxnard Hueneme in six innings in the regional semis Thursday at Lakeview Junior High School.
Orcutt scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the game was called at that point because of the run rule. The Spartans moved to 17-11-1. The Vikings finished 12-15.
The Spartans played to their No. 1 seed in the Central Section playoffs and beat No. 2 Dos Palos 3-0 at Fresno State’s Margie Wright Diamond May 29 for the Central Section Division 5 title. Veteran Orcutt coach Chris Duncan’s team garnered the first sectional divisional championship in program history. Â
Orcutt Academy junior right-hander Lylah Garcia pitched a three-hit complete game Thursday. Garcia struck out six batters and walked one. She helped herself by racking up two hits and driving in a run.
Garcia’s batterymate, senior catcher Jaylene Roybal, backed Garcia with two hits, both doubles, and four RBIs. Marissa Martinez had two hits, including a double, and drove in three Orcutt runs. Emma Washburn also had a hit and an RBI for the Spartans.
Garcia extended the post-season shutout string for Orcutt Academy pitchers to five games. Rosamond scored twice in OA’s win in the first round of the Central Section playoffs. Garcia and senior Orcutt right-hander Valerie Gonzales have not allowed a run since.
