The Athletics are bringing back Seth Brown from Triple-A, selecting his contract and adding him back to the active roster while placing starting catcher Shea Langeliers on the IL before starting the Orioles series:
The Athletics recalled catcher Jhonny Pereda and selected outfielder Seth Brown from Triple-A Las Vegas, placed catcher Shea Langeliers on the 10-day injured list with a strained left oblique, and designated outfielder Drew Avans for assignment, the club announced today.

The team is also bringing back Jhonny Pereda from Triple-A, and outfielder Drew Avans has been designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
Brown spent just two weeks down in the minors before forcing his way back up. In just nine games Brown went an insane 21-for-42 with seven home runs and 13 RBI’s. Those are video game numbers even in a small sample size, and the Athletics noticed. He’ll now return to his teammates hoping to continue that torrid streak at the plate and provide a boost from the left side of the plate. He’s not in the lineup tonight but he could make an appearance later in the game.
The loss of Langeliers will sting in a lot of ways. The A’s primary catcher has been a workhorse behind the plate playing a league-leading 51 games at catcher. Working with the pitching staff everyday he knows everyone’s repertoire and demeanor on the mound better than anyone else on the team. He’s also been a middle of the order bat and slashed .237/.300/.430 with 10 home runs and much-improved plate discipline. We don’t know how long he’ll be out but the hope is it’s the minimum 10-day stint. The team will be worse off without him.
Langeliers’ backups Willie MacIver and Jhonny Pereda figure to split the catching duties while the starter is out until one of them can seize the reigns. Pereda returns to the team after playing just seven games for the Aviators. He enjoyed his time down in the minors, going 9-for-39 with a couple doubles. He’ll be competing directly with MacIver now for not only playing time but also the chance to stick around when Langeliers returns.
The club needed to clear space on the 40-man roster so the Athletics designated rookie outfielder Drew Avans for assignment. The 29-year-old made his Major League debut with the team last month and collected his first two career hits, but he’ll now go through waivers where any other team in the league can claim him. He’s hit well in Triple-A this year and could very well find himself in another organization soon, though the A’s would surely like to keep him around as interesting depth. We’ll find out in the next couple of days.
