The Brewers have claimed outfielder Drew Avans off waivers from the Athletics. Milwaukee has assigned him to the Triple-A Nashville Sounds.
Avans, 28, has been playing at the Triple-A level since 2021, mostly with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. The speedster has had a great season so far, slashing .328/.414/.444 with 16 stolen bases in 48 games with the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators. Avans has only had fifteen major league at-bats in his career (2-15), all coming this year in Sacramento.
This move is most likely just to bolster depth in Nashville. Jared Oliva has been on the IL since May 23rd, and the Sounds’ roster only has two other players listed as outfielders: Jimmy Herron (hitting .222) and Eddie Rosario. Bobby Dalbec, mainly an infielder, has been playing a lot of corner outfield for Nashville.
It’s also possible the Brewers see something in Avans, who has posted pretty impressive stats over the last few years. If he shows enough in the minors, he might get a chance to prove himself with Milwaukee.
