The Toronto Blue Jays have recalled pitcher Spencer Turnbull and have optioned Paxton Schultz to Triple-A Buffalo. This move comes with starter Bowden Francis struggling this season, and not pitching nearly as well as he did his late-season stretch of success in 2024. In two starts at Triple-A, Turnbull has a 9.95 ERA across 6 1/3 innings pitched. Despite these rough starts, he still deserves a chance and could provide value for the Blue Jays.

Spencer Turnbull Recalled by Blue Jays, Paxton Schultz Optioned
Upside of Turnbull for Blue Jays

Turnbull provides upside for Toronto as a serviceable experienced starter. With 67 career starts, can contribute as a solid option in the rotation. The Blue Jays have had to utilize several spot starters such as Eric Lauer, Yariel Rodriguez, and José Ureña with Max Scherzer continuing to rehab his thumb injury. Turnbull dealt with a lat injury last season, but he’s a pitcher who can offer depth and has demonstrated solid command of his pitches. This includes a sweeper that generates a high whiff rate.

Turnbull’s 2.65 ERA across seven starts for the Philadelphia Phillies last season shows what he can still do. He has a deep pitch mix to take down batters. His four-seam fastball, two-seamer, curveball, and changeup allow him to keep opponents perplexed at the plate. His sweeper is his weapon in his arsenal (30.8%) whiff rate, as well as a +5 run value. All these elements could make him a valuable asset for the Blue Jays.

While Turnbull is not an ace starter, he provides versatility and is well-rounded. This comes paired with his ability to be consistent by providing quality starts. If Turnbull can provide the Blue Jays with his solid form from last season, this will provide them with beneficial pitching until Scherzer can return to the rotation.
