It was a light day around the major leagues on Monday. The Yankees enjoyed an off day, a much-needed one on the heels of two straight losses, as they now head back home for a dance with the Royals. There were only nine games across all of baseball, as the Astros and Tigers both had the day off as well. The Yankees primary rivals had minimal action on Monday, but let’s take a look at what still went down.

Tampa Bay Rays (36-30) 10, Boston Red Sox (32-36) 8

The Red Sox failed to maintain their momentum after a series win against the Yankees, dropping an extra innings affair against the surging Rays. Boston never held a lead in this one, and ultimately finished without it, as they drop to four games below .500, while the Rays won their seventh in the the last eight games.

In this battle between Shane Baz and Brayan Bello, it was Bello who faltered first, when the Rays opened up the scoring with a single from Jake Mangum in the fourth. An inning later, Brandon Lowe sent a single the other way to score another before Yandy Díaz did much the same. It put them up 3-0, with some help from a brutal error from Roman Anthony in his major league debut (he finished 0-4 with a walk).

In the bottom of the fifth, the Sox finally put a tally in the run column with a run-scoring double play, and made even more strides in the bottom of the sixth. Romy Gonzalez came off the bench in the inning and slashed a double down the right field line, scoring a pair of runs and knotting the game up at three.

In the top half of the seventh, the Rays scored three more, first on a double from Josh Lowe, followed by a wild pitch and a Jonathan Aranda single up the middle, ultimately putting the Rays up 6-3. The Sox didn’t let it go unanswered however, as they scored a pair thanks to singles from Abraham Toro and Trevor Story in the bottom half.

Up by a run headed into the ninth, the Rays got some insurance with another Aranda RBI, but the Sox countered with two more of their own, which included Anthony’s first career RBI. Nine innings wasn’t enough, and this game headed to extras.

Both squads got their bonus runner to the plate in the tenth, but the nail in the coffin was a pair of Tampa Bay runs in the top of the 11th. The inning saw a bases loaded walk, and another RBI knock from Jake Mangum, who finished what he started. It took some time, but the Rays grabbed another win, putting them in a tie for second place in the East.

Other Games

Cincinnati Reds (34-33) 7, Cleveland Guardians (34-31) 4: The Reds nickeled and dimed their crosstown rivals all day on Monday. Cincy scored in seven different innings and racked up 16 total hits in their smooth victory over the Guardians. Five different Reds had multiple hits to the Guardians’ one, Bo Naylor, who salvaged a homer in this game.

Arizona Diamondbacks (32-34) 8, Seattle Mariners (33-32) 4: The Mariners couldn’t make much happen against Merrill Kelly and the D-Backs until the ninth in this one. The Arizona righty worked six scoreless and struck out seven along the way. Trailing 4-0 in the top of the ninth, the M’s stormed back to tie the game up and push it into extras. In the 11th inning however, Josh Naylor helped the D-Backs avoid a disastrous loss, belting a walk-off grand slam into left-center.
