Coming into Wednesday, the Newark Pilots were positioned in second place in the West Division of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League after winning in three of its first six games during this 2025 season.
The Pilots are 3-1 overall following one tie and one exhibition game thus far.
Two of Newark’s victories this season have come against the Geneva Red Wings, who have yet to put together a win so far.
The two sides were supposed to play on Tuesday morning but that game was postponed.
Infielder Dean Spoto have been a nice bat to start for the Pilots. In four games this year, Spoto has batted .538, which ranks as the third-highest batting average in the league coming into their contest against the Auburn Doubledays on Wednesday night.
While Newark plays at Auburn, Geneva travels to play undefeated Niagara Falls tonight.
Geneva is 0-4 overall and is in the middle of stretch of nine of 10 games on the road here in the early going.
Spoto, Grant Ingram and Casey Wensley have been three hitters that have stepped up for the Pilots during the first part of the season. For the Red Wings, Zach Banks has been that player.
In four games played, Banks is batting .455 with two extra base hits.
On the pitching side of things, Pilots right-handed pitcher Calvin Burkholder has started two games and given Newark six solid innings. Burkholder has an 1.50 earned run average while striking out four batters.
For Geneva, Jake Short has started one game and in that contest, the right-hander tossed six innings and punched out five batters.
Geneva and Newark won’t meet again until Sunday, June 22 at McDonough Park on John Salone Field.
