It was a night to remember for veteran left-hander David Peterson at Citi Field on Wednesday. The red-hot New York Mets picked up their league-leading 44th win of the season, blanking the Washington Nationals 5-0 in front of a fired up home crowd.

Peterson stole the show with a complete-game shutout. He allowed just six hits and no runs while striking out six Nationals hitters across nine dominant innings. Impressively, he didn’t walk a single batter, showing excellent command and control throughout the night.
MLB’s official account praised the performance, posting:
“David Peterson was LIGHTS OUT tonight in Queens! He lowers his ERA to 2.49.”
The 29-year-old is now 5-2 on the season with a 2.49 ERA. Over 79.2 innings, Peterson has struck out 71 batters while issuing only 24 walks. He allowed just four home runs all year.
The Mets’ offense gave him plenty of support with five runs on seven hits. Pete Alonso got things rolling in the bottom of the first with an RBI double that scored Brandon Nimmo.

Juan Soto later launched his 13th home run of the season, and Nimmo added to the lead with a solo shot in the fifth and another in the seventh. He now has 12 homers on the year.

A crowd of 40,681 watched the quick contest, which lasted just 2 hours and 16 minutes. Peterson threw 106 pitches in the win.
The Mets and Nationals wrap up their series Thursday afternoon. After that, New York stays home to welcome the Tampa Bay Rays. The Mets lead the National League East by five games over Philadelphia.
