Escarra&#8217;s game-winning sac fly leads Yankees to comeback win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The loudest roar of the night at Yankee Stadium may have belonged to the Knicks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Devin Williams and J.C. Escarra rivaled it by the 10th inning of a game the Yankees had to have.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After Williams left the bases loaded in the top of the 10th, Escarra delivered a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to lift the Yankees to a stirring 4-3 win over the Padres on Wednesday night in The Bronx.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In what may have been the Yankees\u2019 best win \u2014 and series win, building off Tuesday\u2019s comeback victory \u2014 of the season. <\/p>\n<p>A joyous J.C. JASON SZENES\/NY POST<\/p>\n<p>They fought back twice with game-tying home runs from Cody Bellinger in the seventh (which broke up Dylan Cease\u2019s no-hit bid) and Trent Grisham\u2019s two-run shot in the eighth before finishing it off in the 10th.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust a lot of fight, a lot of grit,\u201d Grisham said. \u201cThis series was kind of the epitome of the guys that are in this locker room: a lot of fight. Every game we were down and fighting back. We were in every single one of them. To come away with the last two is huge.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Williams, who blew a three-run lead in the eighth inning of Monday\u2019s loss, redeemed himself in the top of the 10th with a high-wire act. <\/p>\n<p>Facing the top of the Padres order, he walked a batter and hit a batter to load the bases with two outs, but then he struck out Xander Bogaerts \u2014 his third punch-out of the inning \u2014 on a full count and let out multiple screams as he walked off the mound.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trent Grisham belts the game-tying home in eighth inning of the Yankees\u2019 comeback win over the Padres. Corey Sipkin \/ New York Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting out of that without giving up any runs, I felt like our guys were going to come through and the game was going to be over,\u201d Williams said. \u201cAnd it was.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Oswaldo Cabrera, who failed to get a bunt down in Tuesday\u2019s seventh inning before it turned into a 10-run rally, laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to lead off the bottom of the 10th. <\/p>\n<p>Escarra then pinch hit for Oswald Peraza and worked a 2-2 count off Jeremiah Estrada before lifting a fly ball to left field that was deep enough to score Jasson Dom\u00ednguez from third base to win it for the Yankees (21-16).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMan, a lot was going through my mind,\u201d said Escarra, who was driving an Uber just a few years ago. \u201cMy heart was pounding through my chest, standing there hitting. AP<\/p>\n<p>Minutes after Bellinger\u2019s game-tying blast in the seventh, which made sure Max Fried\u2019s seven terrific innings did not go to waste, the Padres (23-13) took the lead right back in the top of the eighth in front of a crowd of 42,302. <\/p>\n<p>In a bizarre scene, the crowd \u2014 most of whom were apparently following the Knicks-Celtics playoff showdown on their phones \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/07\/sports\/knicks-fans-at-td-garden-go-wild-after-new-york-beats-celtics-in-game-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">erupted in a huge roar when the game went final<\/a>, just as Jackson Merrill lifted an RBI single to left field to put the Padres up 2-1.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ian Hamilton had relieved Fried to start the eighth and issued a pair of walks around an out before giving way to Luke Weaver. <\/p>\n<p>Cody Bellinger belts a solo homer in the seventh inning of the Yankees\u2019 comeback win over the Padres. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST<\/p>\n<p>Merrill\u2019s single came off Weaver, as did Bogaerts\u2019 sacrifice fly that made it 3-1.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Grisham delivered yet again in the bottom of the eighth. <\/p>\n<p>After Cabrera led off with a walk, Grisham pinch hit for Jorbit Vivas and clobbered Jason Adam\u2019s changeup to right field for his 10th home run of the season that tied it 3-3.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fried allowed his first earned run since April 15 in the fourth inning when Merrill crushed a sweeper into the Yankees bullpen to put the Padres up 1-0. <\/p>\n<p>Max Fried held the Padres to one run over seven innings in the Yankees\u2019 comeback win. Jason Szenes \/ New York Post<\/p>\n<p>It snapped a stretch of 27\u2009\u00b9\/\u2083 straight innings without allowing an earned run.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On a night when Cease had no-hit stuff \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/07\/sports\/dylan-cease-exits-with-apparent-injury-after-yankees-break-up-no-hit-bid\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">before leaving the game with a trainer<\/a> two batters after Bellinger\u2019s homer \u2014 Fried matched him while striking out eight across seven innings of one-run ball. <\/p>\n<p>Aaron Boone said it was the best command Fried had all season, which the lefty agreed with as he ended the night with a 1.05 ERA through eight starts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dylan Cease had no-hit the Yankees for 6 1\/3 inning but lost the bid for history after Cody Bellinger\u2019s homer and then had to exit the game with an injury. They\u2019ve been a playoff team and they\u2019ve got a lot of the same core. \u2026 We went out there and played our brand of baseball. It was really big. We went down, but the offense always came back and answered.
