After winning five series in a row and coming off a sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals, the Toronto Blue Jays were riding a wave of momentum into their three-game set at Citizens Bank Park in the City of Brotherly Love against the Philadelphia Phillies.<\/p>\n

However, Toronto didn’t have the result they were after in that series, with Philly winning all three contests for a sweep. Philadelphia punctuated its dominance of the Blue Jays with an 11-4 victory on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Toronto’s bats were silenced by Philadelphia’s stellar pitching, particularly by the Phillies’ triumvirate of Cristopher Sanchez, Ranger Suarez and Zack Wheeler, who was on the mound in the series finale. The three limited the Blue Jays to just four runs on 13 hits across 20 total innings during the series.<\/p>\n

Blue Jays manager John Schneider couldn’t do much but acknowledge the brilliance of Philadelphia’s starters in the series.<\/p>\n

\u201cStarting pitching kind of just shut us down,\u201d said Schneider after the finale (h\/t David Singh of Sportsnet<\/a>). \u201cThey’re pretty good. And that set the tone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Phillies entered Sunday with a starting pitching 3.58 ERA and 3.32 FIP, seventh and first overall in the big leagues<\/a>, respectively. Toronto surely felt that in the final game of the series as Wheeler had his way against the Blue Jays, allowing just an earned run on four hits with nine strikeouts in six innings of work.<\/p>\n

The 38-33 Blue Jays will take a rest this Monday before getting back to it on Tuesday, when they open a three-game home stand at Rogers Centre in Toronto versus the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks.<\/p>\n
