If Chicago Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer plans on acquiring Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara, then he\u2019s certainly not tipping his hand just yet.<\/p>\n

And if Hoyer hears or reads anything about the Cubs possibly acquiring the 2022 NL Cy Young winner, then that\u2019s news to him.<\/p>\n

Longtime MLB executive Jim Bowden recently proposed the Cubs trade pitcher Cade Horton, outfielders Owen Caissie and Kelvin Alc\u00e1ntara, and shortstop Ronny Cruz to land Alcantara ahead of the July 31 deadline. The key word there is \u201cproposed,\u201d as there have been no credible rumors or reports linking Alcantara to the NL Central-leading Cubs.<\/p>\n

Speaking on 670 The Score on Tuesday afternoon, Hoyer all but officially dismissed Bowden\u2019s idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t read that stuff,\u201d Hoyer said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like the fact that people are always talking about the trade deadline,\u201d Hoyer added<\/a>, \u201cbut ultimately, I don\u2019t read that stuff for a reason.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bowden suggested<\/a> that Horton could immediately replace Alcantara in the Marlins\u2019 rotation. He added that the two corner outfielders, Caissie and Kevin Alc\u00e1ntara, should be \u201cmajor-league ready\u201d by next year.<\/p>\n

\u201cSure, this package would be a stiff price for the Cubs to pay,\u201d Bowden wrote, \u201cbut given their position player depth in the majors, it\u2019s a risk worth taking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alcantara is enduring a nightmarish season for the Marlins in his first year back from Tommy John surgery. The two-time All-Star entered Wednesday with a 6.88 ERA and -1.1 bWAR over 68 innings.<\/p>\n

Only five qualified pitchers have as bad (or worse) a walks-per-nine rate as Alcantara\u2019s 4.2. Luckily for Alcantara, he hasn\u2019t thrown enough innings to qualify among the leaders\u00a0just yet.<\/p>\n
