When the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants moved to California in 1958, they brought with them a storied matchup forged in the heart of New York City.<\/p>\n
Decades of fierce competition found new life on the West Coast, intertwining with the ambitions of two burgeoning cities: San Francisco and Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

Both have claimed eight World Series titles.<\/p>\n
The Giants and the Dodgers have faced each other 2,585 times, with the Giants leading the all-time series by a razor-thin margin of just four games.<\/p>\n
This battle for supremacy on the field mirrors the cities\u2019 economic battles. There, too, both are powerhouses.<\/p>\n
The Los Angeles metropolitan statistical area has a larger GDP at\u00a0$1.295 trillion<\/a>\u00a0vs. SF\u2019s\u00a0$778.9 billion<\/a>, due to its size and sprawl (like Brooklyn). But per capita, San Francisco punches above its weight, powered by concentrated banking and technology wealth (like Manhattan).<\/p>\n Snapshots of the epic sports rivalry:<\/p>\n It\u2019s 1962. A three-game playoff will decide the National League pennant.\u00a0In the final inning of the final game<\/a>, the Dodgers lead 4\u20132. Giants legend Willie Mays said later, \u201cI never thought we\u2019d come back \u2026 never in a million years.\u201d But he rips a line drive anyway, and when the dust clears the Giants win 6\u20134. SF celebrated like it was New Year\u2019s Eve.<\/p>\n It\u2019s 2024. The Giants fall and the\u00a0Dodgers win it all<\/a>, besting the New York Yankees in the World Series. Some 225,000 people flood downtown Los Angeles to see the champions of America\u2019s pastime.<\/p>\n As Walter O\u2019Malley, the Dodgers\u2019 owner at the time of the move from Brooklyn, told\u00a0Time\u00a0magazine, \u201cI feel that we are transplanting not only a baseball team, but a way of life.\u201d<\/p>\n True then, true now.
