{"id":125123,"date":"2025-06-23T13:05:16","date_gmt":"2025-06-23T13:05:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/125123\/"},"modified":"2025-06-23T13:05:16","modified_gmt":"2025-06-23T13:05:16","slug":"does-success-of-rays-starters-mean-the-end-of-using-the-opener","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/125123\/","title":{"rendered":"Does success of Rays starters mean the end of using the opener?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">TAMPA \u2014 The amount of innings the Rays have gotten from their starting pitchers \u2014 an American League-leading 429 1\/3 going into play Saturday \u2014 has been one of the biggest factors in the team\u2019s success this season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">That\u2019s both in terms of how good the five starters \u2014 Ryan Pepiot, Zack Littell, Taj Bradley, Drew Rasmussen and Shane Baz, plus Joe Boyle for one outing \u2014 have pitched, and how the Rays, in what seems like a philosophical change, have allowed them to work deeper into games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">\u201cWithout question with this group we have confidence in their ability to take the ball,\u201d pitching coach Kyle Snyder said. \u201dThey\u2019ve done a really good job and given us an opportunity to get the lead in the first six innings of the game, and that\u2019s their job.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">But has their success meant goodbye to an old friend, the opener?<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">The Rays in 2018 pioneered the now common strategy of using a reliever to face the tough hitters atop the opposing lineup, then bring in a starter-type to work bulk innings (roughly three to six), limiting his exposure, often successfully.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">With their current group of starters \u2014 plus potentially two-time All-Star Shane McClanahan eventually returning from injury and Boyle, Ian Seymour and Joe Rock among those in reserve at Triple A \u2014 the Rays wouldn\u2019t seem to have any use for an opener.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">\u201cI think it speaks to the confidence, the trust and the quality of what we have in the front of the game compared to maybe what we\u2019ve had in the past,\u201d Snyder said. \u201cAnybody that we\u2019ve opened for doesn\u2019t necessarily mean we consider those guys kind of swing men, or back-of-the-rotation starters, but we have confidence in these guys in terms of their overall stuff to face 27 hitters. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">\u201cI think a lot of (the opener use) was born by wanting to limit the number of times a particular pitcher faced the meat of the order. TERRILL  |  Associated Press\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">That said, they\u2019re also not ready to abandon the opener. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">Injuries can quickly change the dynamic of the rotation, a rainout can create a doubleheader that tests pitching depth, a specific matchup might look better with a pitcher with one distinct style starting ahead of another who throws differently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">\u201cOne hundred percent, there\u2019s no way in the world it is dead,\u201d Snyder said. \u201cEssentially it\u2019s no different than how we use the flexibility on the (position player) side of the roster. They won 108 of those games, for a .603 clip. (In other games over that 2018-2024 span, they were 462-348, .570.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">Manager Kevin Cash was asked last weekend if he preferred running his pitching staff this traditional, somewhat old-school way of having the starters go deep, averaging nearly six innings per game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body-float article__body-float-left\">\u201cI don\u2019t know about that,\u201d Cash said. \u201cI prefer whatever is going to give us the best chance to win games and do it consistently. Zalupski hasn\u2019t shared any plans. Miller said his group would look first to build a new stadium in the Tampa Bay area, and that the team wouldn\u2019t go further than Orlando. \u201cYou won\u2019t see the Rays relocating out of Central Florida, whether it was our group or another group,\u201d he told The Athletic. \u201cThe league, that\u2019s what they\u2019re looking for. Someone who can not only buy the club, but solves the stadium problem.\u201d Hillsborough County commissioner Ken Hagen, who says a lot, told the JP Peterson Show podcast<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?si=oqN_x00rXYxhZ3NW&amp;v=YWjc8Hn-w5w&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?si=oqN_x00rXYxhZ3NW&amp;v=YWjc8Hn-w5w&amp;feature=youtu.be\"> he was \u201csupremely confident\u201d<\/a> an agreement with Zalupski\u2019s group for a new stadium on the Tampa side could be reached. Even Pinellas County commissioner Chris Latvala acknowledged, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ComChrisLatvala\/status\/1935450874345619830\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ComChrisLatvala\/status\/1935450874345619830\">in an X post<\/a>, \u201cI think they will be going to Tampa.\u201d Just connecting dots: Could Zalupski\u2019s connection with Gov. Ron DeSantis lead to strong consideration of the state Fairgrounds site?
