Boston Red Sox<\/a> outfielder Roman Anthony’s first day in a big-league clubhouse was June 9, when he went 0-4 with an RBI groundout in his debut against the\u00a0Tampa Bay Rays<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Less than one week later, the biggest blockbuster trade of the 2025 season thus far rocked that very clubhouse. The Red Sox sent Rafael Devers, the most productive hitter in their lineup, to the\u00a0San Francisco Giants<\/a> in exchange for two major-league pitchers (Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison) and two minor-league prospects (outfielder James Tibbs III and pitcher Jose Bello).<\/p>\n

And just like that, Anthony had to grapple with the loss of a locker room leader only six days into his\u00a0MLB<\/a> tenure.<\/p>\n

Anthony has since spoken about the impact Devers had on his early baseball career, giving many a compliment to the former Red Sox designated hitter.<\/p>\n

“I got to know him a little bit last year and spent time with him in camp this year. He was always great to me.\u00a0He was always great to watch,”\u00a0Anthony said, via the Mercury News’ Cam Inman<\/a>.\u00a0“Obviously, when you have a hitter who\u2019s generational like him, it\u2019s great and you learn from watching him. You watch their routines. You watch how on-point they are with everything they do, how good his cage work is and everything he does. It\u2019s no mistake why he is as good as he is.\u201d<\/p>\n

In dealing Devers, the Red Sox oriented themselves more towards the future, with the expectation being that the franchise’s “Big 3”\u00a0\u2013 Anthony, third baseman Marcelo Mayer, and second baseman Kristian Campbell\u00a0\u2013 will soon become leaders of the clubhouse themselves.<\/p>\n

Anthony, like most rookies immediately after being promoted to the majors, has struggled thus far, hitting .111 with one home run and five RBIs in 36 at-bats. The future still remains bright for Anthony, who will soon adjust to the Big Leagues and become a valuable contributor to the Red Sox’s future success\u00a0\u2013 much like a player he has frequently looked up to in Devers.<\/p>\n
