A banner night for backup catcher Braxton Fulford and a nice comeback equaled \u2026 another loss for the Rockies.<\/p>\n
They fell, 10-6, to the Brewers on Friday night at American Family Field, suffering their fourth consecutive loss and dropping their record to 18-64.<\/p>\n
And so it goes in Colorado\u2019s season of discontent.<\/p>\n
Milwaukee hammered starter Kyle Freeland early and put the game away late against relievers Ryan Rolison and Jake Bird.<\/p>\n
Colorado cut the lead to 7-6 in the eighth on Fulford\u2019s two-run double, but the Brewers rebounded with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Brice Turang and Caleb Durbin hit back-to-back singles off Rolison, who was replaced by Bird. Bird, who\u2019s been so good this season, walked Sal Frelick to load the bases, gave up an RBI groundout to Jackson Chourio, and then a two-run double to Christian Yelich into the left-field corner.<\/p>\n
Fulford, playing for injured starting catcher Hunter Goodman, was 3 for 4 and drove in three runs. His three hits were a career high.<\/p>\n
Freeland, coming off a stint on the injured list, was fresh. He unleashed a 95 mph fastball in the first inning against Yelich, Freeland\u2019s fastest pitch since May 25, 2021, vs. the Mets.<\/p>\n
Freeland was in command through the first three innings, but it all fell apart in the Brewers\u2019 six-run fourth. They sent nine batters to the plate and battered Freeland for five hits. Turang\u2019s two-run bases-loaded double was Milwaukee\u2019s first big blow. Even bigger was Chourio\u2019s two-out, three-run homer to right on a Freeland\u2019s 1-1 changeup.<\/p>\n
Freeland, now 1-9 with a 5.56 ERA, was charged with six runs on eight hits over four innings. He struck out two and walked three, tying a season high.<\/p>\n
Colorado got back into the game with a three-run fifth. Ryan Ritter\u2019s groundout to short scored Brenton Doyle, who led off with a bloop single off starter Jose Quintana, and Thairo Estrada\u2019s single scored Ritter and Jordan Beck, who had reached on a two-out double.<\/p>\n
The Rockies cut Milwaukee\u2019s lead to 7-4 in the sixth on a walk by Ryan McMahon and an RBI double by Fulford.<\/p>\n
Goodman sidelined. Goodman, who\u2019s been the Rockies\u2019 best offensive player this season, was out of the starting lineup. The Rockies initially thought Goodman was dealing with a leg cramp, but manager Warren Schaeffer said that Goodman has hamstring tightness.<\/p>\n
The catcher has hit safely in seven consecutive games, one game shy of tying his career high. He\u2019s batting .321 (9 for 28) during his seven-game streak.<\/p>\n
