The 19-year major leaguer had battled Parkinson&#8217;s disease for nearly 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Pirates\/status\/1939051594710163857\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Pittsburgh Pirates;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Pittsburgh Pirates<\/a> and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Reds\/status\/1939064192633602220\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Cincinnati Reds;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Cincinnati Reds<\/a>, the teams with whom Parker played the majority of his MLB career, expressed their condolences. As did the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Athletics\/status\/1939069832822943970\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Athletics;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Athletics<\/a>, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Angels\/status\/1939141139929669881\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Angels;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Angels<\/a>, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Brewers\/status\/1939074159574708653\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Brewers;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Brewers<\/a> and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BlueJays\/status\/1939119596075680233\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Blue Jays;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Blue Jays<\/a>, in addition to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MLB\/status\/1939059853181493650\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Major League Baseball;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Major League Baseball<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Plenty of Parker&#8217;s former teammates, fellow Hall of Famers and current Pirates players voiced their sympathies as well.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Fellow Hall of Famer Bert Blyleven and Parker were teammates on the Pirates from 1977-80, which included winning the World Series in 1979.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What a sad [day] as my former teammate and friend, HOF&#8217;er Dave Parker, passed away,&#8221; Blyleven posted on social media. &#8220;He fought Parkinson&#8217;s for years. Our condolences to his wife Kellye, his family and everyone that had the great opportunity to be with him. RIP Cobra.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMan, I am crushed,&#8221; former teammate Dave Stewart told <a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/mlb\/columnist\/bob-nightengale\/2025\/06\/28\/dave-parker-death-baseball-hall-of-fame\/84403566007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:USA Today&#039;s Bob Nightengale;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">USA Today&#8217;s Bob Nightengale<\/a>. \u201cHe\u2019s one of the greatest teammates I\u2019ve ever had. He had such a presence when he walked into the room.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Parker and Stewart played together on the Oakland Athletics in 1988 and 1989, getting to the World Series in both seasons and winning a championship on their second try.<\/p>\n<p>Keith Hernandez didn&#8217;t play on any teams with Parker, but was certainly a peer as both were top major leaguers in the late 1970s through the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The best player of the late &#8217;70s and early &#8217;80s,&#8221; Hernandez told the New York Post&#8217;s Mike Puma. &#8220;Great boisterous peer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He used to say, &#8220;When the leaves turn brown, I will be wearing the [batting title] crown.&#8221; Until I usurped his crown in &#8217;79. He was a better player than me. RIP.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hernandez did indeed win the National League batting title in 1979 with a .344 average after Parker won it for the previous two consecutive seasons, batting .338 in 1977 and .334 in 1978.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Fellow Hall of Famer Frank Thomas remembered fielding a ground ball from Parker at first base early in his major league career.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;RIP, Dave Parker, the Cobra!&#8221; Thomas posted on social media. &#8220;One of the greatest to ever do it. Love watching you as a kid. I will always remember that first line drive ground ball you hit me in the show right off my chest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You said, welcome to the show, kid,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;That big smile and the finger point trot. #Legendary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Eric Davis, Parker&#8217;s teammate with the Reds, issued a statement because he was too distraught to talk, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/mlb\/columnist\/bob-nightengale\/2025\/06\/28\/dave-parker-death-baseball-hall-of-fame\/84403566007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:according to Nightengale;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">according to Nightengale<\/a>. The thought that Parker wouldn&#8217;t be alive for his Hall of Fame induction was too upsetting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe probably had more impact on young players than any player I\u2019ve ever been around,&#8221; Davis said.<\/p>\n<p>Current Reds manager Terry Francona played with Parker on the 1987 Reds and 1990 Brewers, remembered getting to play with a star he long admired.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He was a big, lovable&#8230; I caught him toward the end of his career,&#8221; Francona recalled. &#8220;He was funny, you could mess with him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not too much,&#8221; he added with a laugh.<\/p>\n<p>Pirates veteran Andrew McCutchen shared his thoughts on Parker <a data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AlexJStumpf\/status\/1939133731685474575\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:with MLB.com&#039;s Alex Stumpf;cpos:11;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">with MLB.com&#8217;s Alex Stumpf<\/a>, acknowledging what he meant to Pittsburgh fans.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a tough thing to hear, but he had been battling Parkinson&#8217;s for quite some time,&#8221; <a data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AlexJStumpf\/status\/1939133731685474575\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:McCutchen said;cpos:12;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">McCutchen said<\/a>. &#8220;It was rough to see him go through that. I just hope now he&#8217;s in a a better place and not having to worry about any of that stuff anymore.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just thinking about his family and the fanbase who may have had any type of interaction with him, childhoods,&#8221; he added. &#8220;He was probably Superman to a lot of people when he played.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>McCutchen&#8217;s teammate, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:13;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/mlb\/players\/12049\" data-ylk=\"slk:Nick Gonzales;cpos:13;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nick Gonzales<\/a>, currently wears the No. 39 jersey that Parker wore during his 11 seasons with the Pirates (and throughout his career) and thinks it should be retired.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It just meant a little bit more today, playing with that number,&#8221; Gonzales said on Saturday. &#8220;I think it should be retired and I should get a new number, honestly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That might happen at some point,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;For what he did for this community&#8230; it&#8217;s an honor just to wear it on my back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Parker was <a data-i13n=\"cpos:14;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/dick-allen-dave-parker-to-be-inducted-into-baseball-hall-of-fame-004207554.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame;cpos:14;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame<\/a> in December by the Classic Era Committee, earning votes on 14 of 16 ballots.
