It’s been said many times before, but there’s no question that if the Chicago Cubs don’t do what’s needed over the next few weeks at the trade deadline, it’s impossible to have Jed Hoyer back next year. Hoyer\u2019s contract runs out at the end of the year, and according to a recent report from Bob Nightengale of USA Today, he understands what’s at stake.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Cubs didn\u2019t trade third baseman Isaac Paredes and prized young outfielder Cam Smith for one guaranteed year of All-Star right fielder Kyle Tucker to sit back at the deadline now… Jed Hoyer, president of baseball operations, whose contract expires after the season, knows what\u2019s at stake,\u201d he wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nightengale added that the Cubs are interested in adding another starter at the deadline. For a contending team, pitching can never be understated.<\/p>\n

The Cubs need arms, no matter how people feel about where their rotation stands. With the multiple injuries they’ve faced, it’d only be smart if the Cubs go out and make a deal. According to Nightengale, former New York Yankees starter and current Athletics right-hander Luis Severino is the name they have tabs on.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are scouring the market for a starter, keeping a close eye on Alcantara (2 \u00bd years remaining on his 5-year, $56 million contract), Keller (3 \u00bd years remaining on his 5-year, $70 million deal) and Luis Severino of the Athletics (2 \u00bd years remaining on his 3-year, $67 million contract),\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

Severino has been brutal this year, and frankly, wouldn’t be the best addition. However, if he could be had for a cheap price, there’s reason to believe he could turn things around. He owns a 4.83 ERA, and outside of a few decent outings, he’s been roughed up.<\/p>\n

His 4.83 ERA and 1.35 WHIP might not sound horrible, but he’s allowed 23 earned runs in June. He allowed 15 in May and 16 in April.<\/p>\n

Severinio\u2019s road splits are intriguing with a 2.27 ERA away from Sacramento, however.<\/p>\n
