Luis Severino\u2019s return to Yankee Stadium \u2014 more than a season in the making \u2014 would\u2019ve been a spectacle even without the added context.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Even without his name swirling in trade rumors. Even without Severino comparing games at Sutter Health Park, the minor league stadium in West Sacramento, Calif., hosting the Athletics until they complete their Las Vegas move, to \u201cspring training\u201d and ripping it as a listless place to pitch. <\/p>\n

Even without his postgame admission Sunday that he spent a recent bullpen session trying to figure out if he was tipping pitches \u2014 an issue the Yankees spent years trying to fix.\u00a0<\/p>\n

All of that collided during Severino\u2019s dud in The Bronx, where he failed to make it out of the fourth inning during the Yankees\u2019 12-5 win<\/a>, surrendered seven runs \u2014 six earned \u2014 and struggled with command (three walks, two hit batters). <\/p>\n

Neither Severino nor A\u2019s manager Mark Kotsay thought pitch-tipping played a role, and Severino didn\u2019t regret being \u201chonest\u201d with his thoughts about the A\u2019s ballpark. <\/p>\n

He can\u2019t control if he gets traded before the July 31 deadline, but he acknowledged that this is \u201cnot the year I was planning.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, if they trade me or not, I\u2019m gonna keep grinding, trying to be my best self,\u201d Severino, who pitched for the Yankees from 2015-23, said. \u201c\u2026 I can do nothing about if they get mad [at the ballpark comments] or not. I just say what it is, you know. I\u2019m not gonna go out there \u2014 if you ask me how I feel pitching at home, I\u2019m not gonna lie to you. Because at the end, you guys are gonna figure out if it\u2019s a lie or not. \u2026 I was not trying to, I mean, hurt nobody\u2019s feelings by saying that, but I think I\u2019m not the only one who feels the same way.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Severino saw \u201clittle things\u201d from his prior start that didn\u2019t categorically suggest tipping, but \u201cmost of the tippings are not 100 percent. <\/p>\n

They\u2019re like 70 or 80 percent.\u201d He worked on glove positioning, changed up mechanics ahead and felt improvement Sunday before everything unraveled.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

One year after Severino\u2019s \u201ctwo good hitters\u201d jab while with the Mets, the Yankees, for a second time in 2025, forced an early exit. <\/p>\n

Jazz Chisholm Jr. sent the first pitch of the second inning over the fence, and Severino loaded the bases in the third before surrendering a triple to Chisholm. <\/p>\n

Then, Aaron Judge drove in two more runs with a fourth-inning homer. For a Yankees group stuck in a weeks-long funk, Severino served as the antidote.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Perhaps he could be back in New York City again just over a month from now, if the Mets trade for him. <\/p>\n

Perhaps he\u2019ll have to settle for pitching in Sacramento. <\/p>\n

But Severino\u2019s prevailing thought, after allowing 29 earned runs across his past six starts, was that the struggling pitcher who keeps appearing \u201cis not me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
