Talking to Colson and just watching his body language on the field, he’s in a confident place.”

Janish provided updates on several Sox prospects as June ended.

Montgomery hit .281 in 16 games last month with six home runs and 16 RBIs. The 2021 first-round pick spent nearly two weeks away from the Knights in late April/early May, working one-on-one with Sox director of hitting Ryan Fuller at the organization’s Arizona complex.

Montgomery is hitting .220 with 11 home runs and 29 RBIs in 53 games for Charlotte. MLB.com ranks the 23-year-old as the No. 5 prospect in the Sox system.

As to what’s next for Montgomery, Janish said: “Relative to him getting the opportunity to go to Chicago, we’ll see what the future holds. But just really excited about the consistency that he’s shown over the last six weeks, which to be transparent, had eluded him a little bit most of the last year.

“So he’s in a good spot. He’s hitting the ball hard, he’s having good at-bats. One of the homers (Sunday) was a really tough at-bat off of a left-handed pitcher (Nick Margevicius) throwing hard, and he had fouled some tough pitches off, took some tough pitches and then ran one out of the yard. So there’s some context there that is super encouraging for sure.”

Pitching prospect Hagen Smith had an encouraging Saturday, allowing one hit in 1 2/3 scoreless innings for Double-A Birmingham at Knoxville. The left-hander had three strikeouts and one walk in his return from the injured list.

It was his first start since May 10. Smith, 21, missed time with left elbow soreness and also spent time away making mechanical adjustments.

<img decoding="async" class=" lazyautosizes lazyload" alt="Hagen Smith practices with other White Sox pitchers during spring training at Camelback Ranch on Feb. 15, 2025, in Glendale, Ariz. (Armando L. Sanchez/Chicago Tribune)

“We were probably cautious with the way we handled the situation, and it was encouraging to get him back into the game,” Janish said. “The thing that stuck out, honestly, the game was good, he threw well, his body was moving well, he felt good afterward. But what I would highlight is the time frame that he was in between outings — so when he was having to make some adjustments that we were making with him — it was very telling how much he really enjoys pitching.

“All he wanted to do was push it and get back on the mound and wants to compete. That’s what sticks out to me about Hagen.”

Smith, the No. 5 pick in last year’s draft, has a 1.98 ERA and 45 strikeouts in eight starts for the Barons this season. He is the No. 3 prospect in the Sox organization, according to MLB.com.

“He’s a very no-nonsense kind of guy,” Janish said. “Doesn’t want to do a whole lot other than play/pitch, which I love about him. (Saturday’s start) was encouraging. We’ll continue to build him back up and monitor the recovery and all that kind of stuff. But it was good to see him back on the field, and he definitely threw well and showed why it’s an exciting guy to have in the org.”

The White Sox will have two representatives at the MLB All-Star Futures Game in pitcher Noah Schultz and outfielder Braden Montgomery. The event is July 12 at Truist Park in Atlanta.

Schultz, a first-round pick in 2022, participated in last year’s Futures Game in Arlington, Texas.

The Oswego East product is 4-4 with a 4.50 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 14 starts between Birmingham and Charlotte in 2025. MLB.com rates Schultz, 21, as the top prospect in the Sox organization.

<img decoding="async" class=" lazyautosizes lazyload" alt="White Sox pitcher Noah Schultz throws during the fifth inning of a spring training baseball game against the Padres on Feb. 26, 2025, in Phoenix. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster)

“We are enamored with his ability on the mound, on the field and in between the lines,” Janish said. “He continues to develop off the field as well, from a teammate standpoint, and from just watching him understand what he wants to accomplish has been fun from our side. So that’s the biggest thing with Noah.”

The Sox acquired Montgomery from Boston during the offseason as part of the Garrett Crochet trade. A first-round draft pick last year by Boston, he is rated the No. 4 prospect in the White Sox system.

Montgomery, 22, has a combined .274/.352/.468 slash line with 17 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs, 49 RBIs, 36 runs and an .820 OPS in 70 games between Class A Kannapolis and Class A Winston-Salem.

<img decoding="async" class=" lazyautosizes lazyload" alt="White Sox outfielder Braden Montgomery signs autographs during spring training at Camelback Ranch on Feb. 15, 2025, in Glendale, Ariz.(Armando L. We talk about him offensively. But he can steal a base, play defense, he can really throw.

“I’ve said this about him before, the thing that has impressed me is the way he deals with staff, his teammates. The way he treats the clubhouse guy with respect.
