TORONTO (AP) \u2014 The New York Yankees put right-hander Fernando Cruz on the 15-day injured list Monday because of a strained left oblique and selected righty Geoff Hartlieb from Triple-A.<\/p>\n

Yankees catcher Austin Wells was out of the lineup for a second straight day, with manager Aaron Boone explaining that Wells is sidelined because of a circulation issue in the index finger on his left hand.<\/p>\n

Boone said the injury was likely due to the \u201cwear and tear of catching,\u201d but added that Wells underwent several tests to rule out the possibility of a blood clot. As a result of the invasive nature of one of those tests, Boone said Wells will likely be out until Wednesday. J.C. Escarra will start behind the plate until Wells returns.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything we\u2019ve gotten back has been good so far,\u201d Boone said of Wells\u2019 test results. \u201cIt\u2019s not something that bothers him from a performance standpoint.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wells is batting .214 with 11 home runs and 45 RBIs in 69 games. He hit a career-high 13 home runs last season.<\/p>\n

Wells said he\u2019s been experiencing discoloration on his finger since last season, but it became worse in the past two weeks.<\/p>\n

Two years ago, former Yankees catcher Ben Rortvedt began the season on the injured list after undergoing surgery for an aneurysm in his left shoulder. That injury also began with circualtion issues in one of Rortvedt\u2019s fingers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s pretty much why I wanted to do the testing,\u201d Wells said.<\/p>\n

Cruz\u2019s IL stint is retroactive to June 28. A four-year veteran in his first season with the Yankees, he is 2-3 with a 3.00 ERA and two saves. Cruz has not allowed an earned run in 26 of his 32 appearances and has gone eight outings without giving up a hit.<\/p>\n

Following Monday night\u2019s 5-4 loss to Toronto<\/a>, Boone said MRI results indicated Cruz has a high-grade strain.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, that will be some time,\u201d Boone said.<\/p>\n

Cruz didn\u2019t pitch between May 17 and June 4 because of right shoulder inflammation. He felt sore while warming up with a medicine ball before Sunday\u2019s home win over the Athletics.<\/p>\n

Cruz\u2019s 41.2 percent strikeout rate tops pitchers with at least 20 innings and his 14.73 strikeouts per nine innings is a career high, third among pitchers who have faced 120 or more batters behind Minnesota\u2019s Griffin Jax (15.28) and the Athletics\u2019 Mason Miller (14.87).<\/p>\n

To make room on the 40-man roster for Hartlieb, the Yankees designated infielder CJ Alexander for assignment.<\/p>\n
