Diaz has a 9.64 ERA through six appearances with Triple-A Oklahoma City this year.

The move to call up Diaz will likely be to replace reliever Julian Fernandez, who made his Dodgers debut on Monday evening.

More news: Dodgers’ Dave Roberts Officially Reveals When Tyler Glasnow Will Return

Dodgers are calling up Alexis Díaz, sources tell The Athletic. The former Reds All-Star reliever has been in the minors since being acquired in late May.

— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) July 8, 2025

Diaz is a 2023 All-Star working to get back to his previous dominance.

Diaz had a rough first half to his 2024 campaign with a 4.33 ERA, but finished strong to close out the year with an opposing batting average of just .164 against him. After just six games with the Reds this season, he was optioned and subsequently traded to LA.

Those six games consisted of eight earned runs across six innings, tossing three strikeouts compared to five walks allowed. The 28-year-old has not been hot to start off 2025, but can hopefully provide a spark in his eventual Dodgers debut.

The talent shown in his 2023 season is the framework for what can hopefully be another successful campaign. Diaz had a swing-and-miss rate of 34.8 percent — good for the 95th percentile among active pitchers — and a strikeout rate of 30.1 percent, which graded out in the 90th percentile of hurlers that year.

Diaz’s four-seam fastball had an average velocity of 94.5 mph in 2023, and in his small sample during 2025, dropped to just 93 mph. His slider had an opposing batting average of just .153 against it in 2023 — but during the 44 times he used it this season, hitters seemed to figure it out, batting .385 against it during his six games with the Reds.

The four-seam fastball and slider are the two pitches that Diaz relies on, and the hope is that he has made the changes necessary to bring those tools back to MLB. If Diaz can show those flashes of his All-Star self in a Dodgers uniform, it will be a perfectly timed addition to a bullpen in need.

More news: Dodgers on No Trade List for $107 Million All-Star Outfielder

Have you joined our Discord Channel yet?
