No more."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Four days after the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dodgers<\/a> won the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2024-10-20\/complete-coverage-dodgers-2024-world-series-playoff-run\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World Series<\/a>, and two days before he won the presidential election, Donald Trump was the guest on a sports podcast.<\/p>\n<p>America\u2019s major sports leagues, he said, were pricing out their most loyal customers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe leagues are not taking care of their fans,\u201d Trump said on the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.siriusxm.com\/blog\/trump-belichick-lets-go\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cLet\u2019s Go!\u201d podcast<\/a>. \u201cThey really aren\u2019t. They\u2019re making it impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Dodgers are the greatest show in baseball, with an <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2024-12-09\/dodgers-shohei-ohtani-financial-impact-first-year\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">international tourist attraction<\/a> atop their lineup. <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/attendance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">They pack the largest stadium in the major leagues<\/a> every night.<\/p>\n<p>If tickets to sporting events have gotten too expensive for the average fan \u2014 and 86% of sports fans say they have, according to an <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/en-us\/americans-believe-sports-teams-and-stadiums-are-positive-cities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ipsos poll<\/a> released last month \u2014 then Dodger Stadium is a flash point in the debate over whether teams should pursue every dollar they can or sacrifice a few bucks so they can better nurture a new generation of fans.<\/p>\n<p>Baseball, after all, is touted as America\u2019s last great affordable sport.<\/p>\n<p>Fans are more likely to develop a lifelong baseball habit if they <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/angels\/fans\/junior-angels-kids-club\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">attend a game as a kid<\/a>, according to research cited by the commissioner\u2019s office. Can a family of four afford hundreds of dollars to enjoy a day at the ballpark?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat inability to have that family experience is an incredible negative if you\u2019re just going for the green,\u201d said Andy Dolich, who has run marketing operations for teams in all the major North American sports leagues. \u201cThat\u2019s where you are building your fan bases of the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with The Times, Commissioner Rob Manfred challenged the notion that baseball tickets have become too expensive. The 30 major league teams sold a combined <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/leagues\/majors\/misc.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">71 million tickets<\/a> last year, the most in seven years, and attendance has increased every year since the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"Fans line up to buy food at a concession stand before a baseball game against the Chicago Cubs at Dodger Stadium on Friday.\"   width=\"2000\" height=\"1290\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753343303_171_\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>Fans line up to buy food at a concession stand before a game earlier this month at Dodger Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>(Kevork Djansezian \/ For The Times)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we had an affordability problem, I think you would see it in terms of those numbers,\u201d Manfred said. \u201cThose numbers tell you the opposite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the league, tickets for $20 or less were available for 70% of MLB games last season. No Dodgers game this season is currently on sale at that price.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you want to sit next to <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/realestate\/hot-property\/la-fi-hotprop-mary-hart-burt-sugarman-20190128-story.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Hart<\/a>, it\u2019s expensive,\u201d Manfred said. \u201cI think it\u2019s really important to think about that from an access perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many studies about fan costs use the average price of a resale ticket, but a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/bookies.com\/mlb\/picks\/the-cost-of-attending-mlb-game-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> released this month used the cheapest ticket price on official sale sites, as sampled on a variety of dates this season.<\/p>\n<p>The estimated price for a family of four to see a game at Dodger Stadium this season \u2014 four of those cheap tickets, parking, four hot dogs, two beers and two sodas \u2014 was a league-high $399.68. The league average, according to that study: $208.<\/p>\n<p>Ticket prices can rise and fall daily, based on supply and demand. On the day before the Dodgers\u2019 home opener, The Times checked the prices for every game on the Dodgers\u2019 website.<\/p>\n<p>The cheapest ticket all season, available only for a Wednesday afternoon game against the Miami Marlins, before school lets out: $38. For four seats that day, parking, four hot dogs, and four sodas, the price would be $249.96.<\/p>\n<p>In Los Angeles County, the median family income is $101,800, according to Elly Schoen, assistant director of the Neighborhood Data for Social Change program at the USC Lusk Center. If both parents work, and if they subtract costs for housing, food, child care, health care and transportation, the amount left over each month would be $530.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know if you can spend half your discretionary income on a baseball game,\u201d Schoen said.<\/p>\n<p>Dodgers president Stan Kasten said the team and its <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/dodgers\/tickets\/specials\/76\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">corporate sponsors<\/a> work to provide free and discount tickets. We\u2019re very proud of that, and we work hard at it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, the Dodgers\u2019 average ticket price was $29, according to Team Marketing Report. A decade later \u2014 after winning the World Series twice and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2023-12-09\/complete-coverage-dodgers-sign-shohei-ohtani\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">signing Shohei Ohtani<\/a> as the crown jewel of a superstar-studded roster \u2014 the range of cheapest available prices per game ranged from $38 to $156.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t have it all ways, right?\u201d Manfred said. \u201cThe Dodgers have made a massive financial commitment in terms of players, and they have to run a business that supports that massive financial commitment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Notwithstanding Manfred\u2019s belief that MLB does not have an affordability problem, a popup survey on the league website last week asked fans whether they strongly agreed, somewhat agreed, somewhat disagreed, or strongly disagreed with this statement: \u201cAttending a Major League Baseball game is affordable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If local fans consider the Dodgers\u2019 prices too high, Manfred suggested where they could find a cost-effective alternative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the leaders in terms of thinking about affordability has been the other Los Angeles team,\u201d Manfred said.<\/p>\n<p>Soon after Arte Moreno bought the Angels in 2003 \u2014 and with the team coming off a World Series championship \u2014 the team introduced $3 tickets for kids and teenagers one night per week. The Angels now offer a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/angels\/tickets\/specials\/family-pack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$44 family pack<\/a> \u2014 four tickets, four hot dogs and four drinks \u2014 at more than half their home games. We\u2019ve worked really hard to keep tickets low and have families come in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Ashley Landis \/ Associated Press)<\/p>\n<p>Parking is $20 at Angel Stadium and $40 at Dodger Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just really believe there should be affordability,\u201d Moreno said. \u201cWe want everybody to have access to the stadium. We\u2019ve worked really hard to keep tickets low and have families come in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Angels last appeared in the playoffs 11 years ago, the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/angels\/story\/2025-03-24\/angels-2025-season-preview-mike-trout-ron-washington\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">longest postseason drought<\/a> in the majors. Moreno did not discount the notion that prices might rise if the team returns to contention, but he did not guarantee it either.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the demand exceeds the supply, prices go up,\u201d he said. \u201cBut, for us, you have 45,000 seats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The New York Yankees sold more tickets than any team besides the Dodgers in each of the past three seasons. The Yankees sell <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/yankees\/tickets\/specials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$10 tickets<\/a> for every game: sometimes a few dozen, sometimes a few hundred, sometimes a couple thousand, based on overall demand for each game. As part of a corporate promotion, they also sell tickets under $10 or at 50% off for a handful of games.<\/p>\n<p>The league maintains a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/tickets\/fan-value\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fan value page<\/a>, where the vast majority of teams display a variety of ticket discounts, concession deals and family packs. The Dodgers\u2019 entry on that page features its promotional schedule, highlighted by bobblehead dolls so coveted that they <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2024-08-27\/shohei-ohtani-bobblehead-night-tickets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drive ticket prices ever higher<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On that November podcast, Trump said he knew how to address high ticket prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there are things that have to be done,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>Manfred declined to comment about whether he had heard from Trump or whether he would work with him on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>The Times asked the White House press office what ideas Trump had to lower ticket prices and what timeline he might have for pursuing any such actions. White House spokeswoman Liz Huston packed six sports phrases into a 48-word statement \u2014 \u201cstepping up to the plate\u201d and \u201chome run economy\u201d included \u2014 that did not provide a response to the questions.<\/p>\n<p>Trump did not say he would make the Dodgers affordable again.
