West Virginia<\/a> baseball found out some key answers last week during the 2025 MLB Draft. They had seven guys either get drafted or get signed from last year\u2019s team, and another from the incoming transfer portal class get drafted as well.<\/p>\n

Now, heading towards the fall, West Virginia has a lot more answers in terms of numbers at positions across the diamond. <\/p>\n

Returners <\/p>\n

West Virginia will return only four position players \u2014\u00a0Armani Guzman, Ben Lumsden, Gavin Kelly, and Brodie Kresser. Between those four, there is a lot of position flexibility.<\/p>\n

Guzman can play the outfield as well as second and third base. Lumsden can play the corner outfield spots as well as first base. Kelly, who came to WVU as a catcher, can play in the infield as well as behind the dish, while Kresser will likely still be WVU\u2019s shortstop. <\/p>\n

On the mound, WVU is set to return 11 total arms as of now, with half of those 10 compiling more than 20 innings last season. Carson Estridge and Chase Meyer are the two main returners from last year, but Maxx Yehl will also be returning as he missed this past season due to an arm injury. <\/p>\n

Overall, WVU is set to return 16 players with Bassinger and Kresser coming back. <\/p>\n

Portal Commits<\/p>\n

West Virginia currently has 14 players overall committed out of the portal, but only 13 seem likely to make it to campus, as Owen Puk was drafted by the Washington Nationals. <\/p>\n

Out of those 13, six come from on the mound, with three being left-handed pitchers, and another three being right-handed pitchers. WVU has also added four outfielders from the portal, as well as two catchers, and only one infielder. <\/p>\n

Out of the group, 64Analytics ranks Matthew Graveline as the top portal pickup for the Mountaineers. While Graveline has experience catching while at Ohio State, it\u2019s likely he will be an outfielder for the Mountaineers. Sean Smith, another outfielder, is the second-ranked player in WVU\u2019s portal class. <\/p>\n

Out of the pitchers, WVU has added a lot of starting pitching experience, headlined by Ian Korn and Dawson Montesa, two arms from the Division II level. The Mountaineers also tapped into Division I experience on the mound, going after left-handed pitchers, as they struggled to match up from the left side this past season. <\/p>\n

High School Commits<\/p>\n

West Virginia has 14 commits in the class of 2025, and they also have a lot of positional flexibility. <\/p>\n

WVU has six total pitchers in the class, with five of them being right-handed pitchers. Out of the other eight, seven are infielders, and one is a catcher. <\/p>\n

Perfect Game has four players in WVU\u2019s class ranked in the top 300 of all high school recruits, led by Zahir Barjam and David Perez, two shortstops. Weston Mazey is another infielder, the son of former WVU head coach Randy Mazey. <\/p>\n

Overall, Perfect Game ranks WVU\u2019s class as the 33rd overall class in the country, with only four other schools in the Big 12 ahead of them. <\/p>\n

WVU\u2019s Final Numbers<\/p>\n

Overall, West Virginia will have 43 players if everything holds, and somehow, that number will have to get down to 34 by the time spring rolls around due to the instituted roster limits.<\/p>\n
