{"id":208406,"date":"2025-07-28T10:36:15","date_gmt":"2025-07-28T10:36:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/208406\/"},"modified":"2025-07-28T10:36:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T10:36:15","slug":"missions-drop-fifth-in-a-row-8-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/208406\/","title":{"rendered":"Missions Drop Fifth in a Row, 8-6"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SAN ANTONIO \u2013 Despite the \u201cChristmas in July\u201d promotion that was running at Nelson Wolff Stadium, Santa did not visit the Missions as they lost their fifth straight game, 8-6.<\/p>\n<p>San Antonio was on the verge of ending their losing streak with two outs in the ninth, when Midland\u2019s Drew Swift lined a game-tying single to left field. The RockHounds got the next two batters before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=acuna-000fra&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=madfriars.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-07-27_br\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Francisco Acu\u00f1a<\/a> blasted a two-run homer for his first hit of the series to cut the lead to 8-6.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=sanabr000rom&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=madfriars.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-07-27_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Romeo Sanabria<\/a> followed with a deep drive that was caught a step in front of the right field wall to end the frame.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could have been the easiest three outs in the game, just swing and miss, and whatever, but I think you do see the fight in this club,\u201d said Missions\u2019 manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/montzlu01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=madfriars.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-07-27_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Luke Montz<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want the win, and close doesn\u2019t count, but I do think the tenth inning was an example of the fight that is with this team.\u00a0 We are going to compete, and it speaks volumes for our team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>San Antonio got a solid pitching performance from starter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=haynes001col&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=madfriars.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-07-27_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jagger Haynes<\/a>, who threw five innings and gave up two earned runs while striking out outs.<\/p>\n<p>The 22-year-old lefty\u2019s problems came \u2013 as they have all year \u2013 because of struggles with command. Haynes escaped trouble after walking the first batter of the game when he promptly picked the runner off first. But after he also opened the second inning with a free pass, one-time Padres farmhand Junior Perez, who also hit a bases-clearing triple in the tenth inning, blasted a two-run homer.<\/p>\n<p>Haynes settled down after that and got through five without allowing any more damage, but he exited with his pitch count already up to 75.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJagger is starting to learn not only the art of pitching, but his strengths and how to pitch to them,\u201d said Montz. \u201cHe\u2019s coming into the dugout now between innings and breaking down what he is doing right and how he could be better.\u00a0 He wasn\u2019t doing that at the beginning of the season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a former catcher who was always trying to get my pitchers to throw pitches with conviction, that is what you are starting to see with him. (Photo: Vashaun Newman)<\/p>\n<p>Still down 2-0 in the sixth, the Missions rallied to put three on the board by forcing the issue on the basepaths. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=vilar-000hen&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=madfriars.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-07-27_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Anthony Vilar<\/a> led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a groundout. With two outs, he aggressively broke for third on a pitch in the dirt, then came home when Midland catcher Cole Conn rushed the throw and tossed down the line. Sanabria followed with a single for his lone hit of the night. When the pitcher ignored him at first, the big man \u2013 certainly not known for his speed \u2013 stole his third base of the season to put himself in scoring position for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=fabian000alb&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=madfriars.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-07-27_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Albert Fabian<\/a>. Fabian lined a single to right on the sixth pitch of the at-bat to tie the game, then took an extra base of his own on a poor throw home.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=ortiz-001dev&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=madfriars.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-07-27_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Devin Ortiz<\/a>, the sixth batter of the inning, made the RockHounds pay again when he tomahawked a ball into right field to plate Fabian and give the Missions the lead.<\/p>\n<p>The Missions got strong relief performances from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=jones-010ste&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=madfriars.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-07-27_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Stephen Jones<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=neighb000tys&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=madfriars.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-07-27_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tyson Neighbors<\/a>. Neighbors, who threw an inning and two-thirds and has yet to allow a run in 11.2 innings and seven appearances in July.\u00a0 Six of his seven appearances have been for more than one inning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Padres have a guy named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/suarero01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=madfriars.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-07-27_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Robert Suarez<\/a> who is doing pretty well in the closer\u2019s role, so when Tyson gets up to the major leagues, they are going to expect him to pitch, take a seat, and get back up,\u201d said Montz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe eighth or ninth innings in Double-A could be the sixth and seventh in the big leagues, and he will be ready.<\/p>\n<p>NOTES: Perez and\u00a0Euribiel Angeles have both had a solid series against their former organization-mates. Perez, now 24 and in his second year at Double-A, originally signed with the Padres in 2017 and showed an <a href=\"https:\/\/madfriars.com\/2019\/10\/01\/2019-azl-padres-position-players-of-the-year\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">intriguing blend of power and speed in the desert in 2019<\/a>. He was traded to Oakland for\u00a0Jorge Mateo\u00a0in 2020. He\u2019s hit .226 with a sub-.400 slugging percentage in over 2,100 plate appearances since. Angeles, 23, <a href=\"https:\/\/madfriars.com\/2021\/10\/23\/2021-madfriars-player-of-the-year-series-lake-elsinore-storm\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">won the Cal League batting title<\/a> in 2021 with Lake Elsinore, and was traded for Sean Manaea\u00a0the next spring.
