The New York Mets entered Sunday night\u2019s nationally televised game at Oracle Park hoping to sweep the San Francisco Giants. Behind a mammoth performance from Ronny Mauricio<\/a>, the Mets did just that, notching a 5-3 victory and beginning their West Coast trip with a three-game sweep. New York has now won seven in a row and extended their National League East lead to 1.5 games over the Philadelphia Phillies, who lost earlier Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Kodai Senga<\/a> got the start for New York and turned in his second straight subpar outing. After allowing four runs across only three innings his last time out against the Los Angeles Angels, Senga allowed three runs off four hits and five walks on Sunday.<\/p>\n

The main culprit of Senga\u2019s woes on Sunday was Matt Chapman<\/a>. The veteran third baseman got Senga for two home runs which drove in three runs. Senga\u2019s control struggles led to the aforementioned five walks, inflating his pitch count to 92 after five innings, spelling the end of his night. His season ERA stills sits a superb 2.00.<\/p>\n

Following Senga, Jos\u00e9 Butt\u00f3<\/a>, Gregory Soto<\/a>, Reed Garrett<\/a>, and Brooks Raley<\/a> combined for three scoreless innings. In his Mets\u2019 debut, Soto was lights out setting the top of the Giants\u2019 order down 1-2-3, including a strikeouts.<\/p>\n

Things got a little more complicated in the ninth inning, as Edwin D\u00edaz<\/a> entered in hopes of notching his 23rd save of the season. After an uneven appearance the night before, D\u00edaz walked two and hit a batter to load the bases with one out. D\u00edaz then hunkered down and got both Willy Adames<\/a> and Matt Chapman to strike out swinging.<\/p>\n

Offensively, the Mets were led by the young Mauricio. Mauricio went 4-for-4, his first four-hit game of his career. He had two doubles, one drove in a run and the other led to insurance in the ninth. In between those, he launched a home run into McCovey\u2019s cove, which, at the time, tied the game at three.<\/p>\n

Outside Mauricio\u2019s two RBIs, Juan Soto<\/a>\u2018s solo home run in the seventh, after Mauricio\u2019s splashdown, gave the Mets the lead for good. Both Mauricio and Soto\u2019s solo shots came against All-Star reliever Randy Rodriguez<\/a>. Rodriguez entered Sunday\u2019s game with a 0.82 ERA and is largely regarded as the best relief pitcher in the big leagues this season.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Francisco Alvarez<\/a> had another big game, posting hits in the third and fifth innings, scoring each time he reached base. The bottom five of the Mets\u2019 lineup (Mauricio, Alvarez, Brett Baty<\/a>, Starling Marte<\/a>, and Jeff McNeil<\/a>) combined to go 10-for-18 with six extra-base hits. Brandon Nimmo<\/a> and Francisco Lindor<\/a> drove in the other two runs in the game.<\/p>\n

Player of the Game: Ronny Mauricio<\/p>\n

The young infielder, Ronny Mauricio, had a sensational game, and without him, the Mets\u2019 victory would not have been possible. Mauricio went 4-for-4 with the game-tying home run and two doubles, one of which scored a run. Mauricio has his season OPS up to .761.<\/p>\n

On Deck<\/p>\n

The Mets continue their West Coast road trip as they travel to San Diego for a Monday night game against the Padres. The first game of the three-game set is slated for a 9:40 pm ET first pitch and the probable pitching matchup is Frankie Montas<\/a> versus Dylan Cease<\/a>.<\/p>\n
