This past week has been a rollercoaster of emotions on the field, as the Yankees hit a week’s worth of home runs against the Tampa Bay Rays before succumbing to 2025’s alarming trend of forgetting how to play baseball against division rivals against the Boston Red Sox. Woven into these ups and downs, though, are a number of fun and exciting off-the-field stories — and one on-the-field squirrel. With so much to go over, without further ado, let’s get started!

Oswaldo’s Adventures

Ever since Oswaldo Cabrera injured his ankle back in May, the Yankees’ season has felt incomplete, like something important was missing — that something being, of course, the energy that Cabrera brings to the game day in and day out which made him an instant fan favorite upon his call-up in 2022. Well, although he certainly won’t see the field again until 2026, Cabrera has been making appearances around the Yankees world ever since his ankle has healed enough to allow him.

At the beginning of the week, he hung around Yankee Stadium as the New York City Football Club played a game in the Bronx, donning an Oswaldo Cabrera NYCFC jersey.

On Wednesday, he visited Somerset, where he threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Side note — I love how the Somerset Patriots refuse to give him a position, and simply prefer to label him as “fan favorite.”

And finally, he helped advertise tomorrow’s Hamilton Night at Yankee Stadium by performing as Peggy Schuyler for the Yankees’ social media account — an unexpected crossover, but a welcome one.

Weaver’s Birthday

As part of Players’ Weekend last week, Luke Weaver named “the first glass of salt water to get your day started” as his favorite small moment of his day. Well, to celebrate his birthday on Thursday, the Yankees’ social media team greeted him at the Stadium with… a glass of salt water. A little cheap for a team valued at eleventy gazillion dollars, but I guess it’s the thought that counts.

A Squirrely Mound Visit

In the midst of Friday night’s disappointing 1-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox, a new member of the Yankees’ coaching staff decided to visit the mound for a mid-inning chat: a squirrel!

British Invasion of Cooperstown

Former Yankees reliever Zack Britton visited the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown this week as a Players’ Association Ambassador. While, perhaps unsurprisingly, Britton prioritizes his Orioles career in these photos, he does spotlight his time with the Bombers — and in particular makes sure to highlight his old Yankees teammate, CC Sabathia.

A Glimpse Behind Rice’s Curtain

Yankees catcher/first baseman/human golden retriever Ben Rice doesn’t share much on his social media accounts. Fortunately, his girlfriend posts a bit more — and quite a few of her pictures include Rice, or were clearly taken at a Yankees game.

The History of Seat Cushions

Dave Sims and Suzyn Waldman give us a bit of a behind-the-scenes look at the cushions at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida.

Ryan and Joe, Together at Last

Ryan Ruocco and Joe Girardi worked as partners in the broadcast booth for the first time.

The Yankees Reference Spongebob

After the Yankees hit 14 home runs in the two-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Yankees dove into the Nickelodeon archives to reference the Spongebob episode “Dying for Pie” from 2000. You know, back when Spongebob was actually good.

It’s Sunday once again, and you know what that means — it’s time for our weekly social media…

[2376
5,731,48,1333,29833,107,4,1690,62,2548,2547,1364,3380,68,142,42625
0":"post-269996","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-new-york-yankees","8":"tag-baseball","9":"tag-ben-rice","10":"tag-boston-red-sox","11":"tag-cc-sabathia","12":"tag-fan-favorite","13":"tag-luke-weaver","14":"tag-mlb","15":"tag-new-york","16":"tag-new-york-yankees","17":"tag-newyork","18":"tag-newyorkyankees","19":"tag-oswaldo-cabrera","20":"tag-social-media","21":"tag-tampa-bay-rays","22":"tag-yankees","23":"tag-zack-britton
["GET
