The Pittsburgh Pirates<\/a> claimed infielder\/outfielder Michael Helman off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals.<\/p>\n

Helman was in his first season with the Cardinals after he was traded by the Twins for cash considerations on Feb. 6.<\/p>\n

The 28-year-old played in 18 games with Triple-A Memphis this season and slashed .185\/.260\/.292 with four doubles, a home run and five RBI.<\/p>\n

Helman made his Major-League debut with the Twins last season and went 3 for 10 with a pair of doubles in nine games. He played all three outfield spots and third base during his first season in the big leagues.<\/p>\n

To make room for Helman on the 40-man roster<\/a>, the Pirates transferred infielder Enmanuel Valdez to the 60-day injured list. Valdez was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 9 with right shoulder inflammation.<\/p>\n

In 31 games prior to his injury, Valdez hit .209 with a .657 OPS, four doubles, two triples, two home runs and 12 RBI.<\/p>\n

Rodr\u00edguez to Start Rehab Assignment<\/p>\n

Catcher\/first baseman Endy Rodr\u00edguez will start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday. The 24-year-old has been sidelined since Apr. 15 with a right hand laceration.<\/p>\n

Rodr\u00edguez appeared in 15 games with the Pirates to start the season and posted a .178\/.260\/.244 batting line with three doubles and two RBI.
