CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Guardians<\/a>\u2019 season has become a masterclass in roster management amid constant change. With Gabriel Arias shifting to shortstop, Brayan Rocchio headed back to the minors, and Ben Lively landing on the injured list, the Guardians continue their remarkable balancing act at 25-18 heading into the weekend.<\/p>\n

The pitching staff remains in flux, with reinforcements potentially on the way. <\/p>\n

Terry Pluto put it all in perspective as he did an overview of the Guardians on this week\u2019s Terry\u2019s Talkin\u2019 podcast with host David Campbell<\/p>\n

\u201cParker Messick is a guy that I liked from that it was that was it like the prospects game, whatever they called in spring training that they had,\u201d Pluto said. \u201cI had that guy looked and he looking good down there. I think he might get the next call to come up especially if it\u2019s going to be for like more than one start.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bullpen is getting a boost from Nick Enright, who\u2019s returning from a shoulder injury. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Guardians continue to look toward the horizon, where Shane Bieber and John Means might return by mid-summer.<\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully by the middle of the summer and you hope at least one of them could pitch like Matthew Boyd did last year,\u201d Pluto said.<\/p>\n

Second base has become a position of immediate need. Juan Brito\u2019s broken thumb derailed Cleveland\u2019s plans to promote him and shift Arias to shortstop. <\/p>\n

\u201cFortunately for them, Daniel Schneemann\u2019s having a heck of a year. I don\u2019t know how long it\u2019s going to last but you know he could hold the fort to Brito gets back,\u201d Pluto explained.<\/p>\n

But the most fascinating story might be Gabriel Arias, whose career transformation symbolizes the Guardians\u2019 player development prowess. <\/p>\n

\u201cI had written off Arias,\u201d Pluto said. \u201cHe had over 580 major league at-bats over a couple years, hitting about .220.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then something changed. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a different player,\u201d Pluto said. \u201cIt kicked in for him, you know, and I think some of it sometimes is just maturity. And maybe he knew that he was out of (minor-league) options and that he had to play, and maybe that\u2019s what he needed to hear: \u2018You\u2019re going to play, so don\u2019t screw it up, but you\u2019re going to play.\u2019 <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd maybe that\u2019s what worked for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

This approach \u2013 creating clear opportunities for players to succeed \u2013 has become the Guardians\u2019 organizational hallmark, Pluto said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe nice thing is the way they do business, they\u2019re creating opportunities for their players, and that continues to pay off for them,\u201d Pluto said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Jose Ramirez continues his remarkable play, stealing three bases against Milwaukee earlier this week. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt just goes on with him. It\u2019s just one of the most remarkable things to watch,\u201d Pluto said.<\/p>\n

This constant roster churn might seem chaotic, but for Cleveland, it\u2019s simply part of the process that has them well over .500 despite all the moving pieces, Pluto said. <\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know how they\u2019re 25-18,\u201d Pluto said. \u201c… But the nice thing is the way they do business with, you know, they\u2019re creating opportunities for their players, and that continues to pay off for them.\u201d<\/p>\n
