They also hold a two-game lead over the Boston Red Sox atop the AL Wild Card race.

This matchup with the Tigers is the first of the Yankees’ final two series against winning teams. Their last 13 games are all against sub-.500 opponents — the Minnesota Twins, Baltimore Orioles, and Chicago White Sox. If New York can take two out of three from both Detroit and Boston, they’ll be in a strong position to either steal the division or at least lock down a Wild Card berth.

The Tigers, meanwhile, have controlled the AL Central for most of the season and carry an 8.5-game cushion over the Cleveland Guardians. That lead has held despite Detroit playing some of its worst baseball of the year lately, dropping six of its last 10. Barring an epic collapse, the Tigers are postseason-bound.

Casey Mize gets the start for Detroit. His season has been a tale of two halves: 9–3 with a 3.15 ERA before the All-Star break, but 4–2 with a 5.59 ERA since. He dominated the Yankees back in April, holding them to one run over six innings, though that came in what feels like a different season altogether. More recently, he limited the Mets to one run across five innings, hinting at a potential rebound just in time for October.

Will Warren takes the mound for the Yankees. He’s 8–2 with a 4.28 ERA overall but has been much sharper of late, going 2–1 with a 2.72 ERA over his last seven starts.

His lone rough outing in that stretch came against Boston in August, when he gave up five runs in four innings. Otherwise, he’s been excellent, most recently holding the Houston Astros to two runs in five innings. Warren looks locked in as New York gears up for the postseason.

Predictions

Will Warren’s strong stretch of outings gives the Yankees the edge, while Casey Mize’s inconsistency leaves Detroit vulnerable. Expect a tight, low-scoring game with New York pulling out a 4–3 win. The caveat, of course, is if the Yankees’ bullpen holds it down.

Prediction: Yankees 4, Tigers 3

Starting Lineups

Detroit Tigers

1.
